This is certainly relevant info to 45 "purists" considering the database's lone CD appearance of the 45 version runs only 4:00.

I recall that my single is distributed by MCA.
In fact my 45 came in one of those MCA sleeves. My "Watts In A Tank" vinyl LP is distributed by Atlantic/WEA. Confusion? I wonder if any singles were distributed by the WEA folks. If so would the run time on the singles be the same? The LP version had an extra verse and was close to five minutes in length. |

Yes I have the promos on both. I don't remember which was issued first.
The MCA distributed 45 lists a time of 3:06 on both sides. The WEA distrubted copy has a short version listing 3:07 and a long version listing 5:06. Both the 3:06 MCA and 3:07 WEA clock in at 3:04 as the database states. Both of course have different numbers but both promote the LP "Watts In A Tank" and of course those have different numbers too. Database does not note a long DJ side. Edited by Bill Cahill |

The CD "Sausalito Summernight" has 2 versions of this song; the listing shows a 3:51 single version and a 5:09 album version. If this is correct, that do we make of the 3:04 version? It's on the Regency label, white, but doesn't say anything about being a promo. Might there be single, album, and promo versions?

The MCA-distributed version came first. Its catalog number was 96001. The Atlantic/WEA version's catalog number was 7339. The distribution change ocurred around the time the single debuted on the Hot 100 (I think Atlantic ran an ad in Billboard announcing the change either the week it debuted or the next week), and my sense is that the Atlantic/WEA version should be the more common of the two. I have never seen a copy of the MCA version, but stock copies of the Atlantic/WEA version that I have seen have a very plain white label that one might think to be a promo at first glance. From the catalog and master numbers that Smokin' TomGary quoted, his promo 45 is the Atlantic/WEA version.

Thanks for the scans, Ron. I had never seen an MCA-distributed stock copy.
FYI, the listed (3:06), actual (3:04) on both sides, MCA-distributed promo 45, that Bill Cahill referenced earlier, features a pinkish/purple-ish label. Also, as MCT1 previously reported, I remember for a fact that we got the MCA- distributed copy into the radio station before we did the Atlantic-distributed promo 45 copy. |
