When we played this song on-air in 1981, I remember that we went through
a bunch of Columbia distributed-Jet Records styrene stock copies. We might've started playing it off of a styrene promo 45, but I don't recall us doing so. Anyhow, I never owned a promo 45 copy myself. And since the stock 45's length/listed time is fairly short (3:09) (with db CDs running either (3:05 or 3:06)), it wasn't my highest priority to locate one. Well, I did just locate/buy one. And what'dya know? The (3:09) side says "Long Version", while the other side says "Short Version", and has a listed time of (2:59). Since the song ends cold, my guess is that the "short version" cuts off the approximately :09 long, loud opening guitar note, and begins with the piano, just before Jeff Lynne's vocals begin. When I receive it, I will either confirm or deny this theory. Edited by jimct |

You are correct. I have the promo, and the intro is
shortened on the short version. I don't ever remember hearing the edit on the air. |
