Regarding Janet Jackson's "Black Cat", I believe the "45 version" comment listed next to the Design Of A Decade 1986/1996 CD (A&M 314540399) in the database is incorrect. If I'm not mistaken, this CD actually contains the "video mix/long solo" DJ edit.

Does anyone know if the "video mix/long solo" edit and one the "featuring Vernon Reid" edit are identical tracks, or are these two distinctly different versions?

Here are details of the US promo CD single:

75021 7972 2
1. Video Mix/Short Solo (listed & actual 4:31)
2. Video Mix/Long Solo (listed & actual 4:48)
3. LP Version (listed & actual 4:29)
4. Featuring Vernon Reid (listed & actual 4:48)
5. 3 Snaps Up 7" (listed & actual 4:24)
6. Funky 7" (listed & actual 4:41)
7. 3 Snaps Up 12" (listed & actual 7:31)
8. Funky 12" (listed & actual 5:44)

Mixes 2 & 4 are very different mixes. The guitar and drums are completely different on the "Featuring Vernon Reid" version. The backing track might actually be completely re-recorded.

Thanks very much for the confirming this, Aaron.

I've now discovered there's another thread already dedicated to Black Cat - Janet Jackson. For some reason, nothing turned up about this song when I tried using the message board search engine last night. At any rate, my apologies for the duplicate thread.

Even though the 45 version on CD is readily available, my
curiosity wonders something. Since the "Video Mix/Short
Solo" and the LP version differ by only a couple seconds,
they are two different mixes, correct? As Eric A. stated in
2007, the LP version ..."starts with the snarling cat, and
ends with a fade" and the video mix starts with drums,
correct?

The LP version on the promo CD single starts with the drums, but it is
definitely a different mix from the Video Mix.
