Does anybody have timing info on "Hawaii Tattoo" by the Waikikis?
It's listed in the database as unavailable on domestic cd, but it is available (in some form) on iTunes and on foreign compilations. There is a 2:03 version that appears on an Australian compilation called "Hazy Memories, Volume 2." This version is also available on an iTunes digital album of lost hits from the '50s and '60s. I have no doubt this is an original recording, but I have also heard an approximately 2:23 version and I am not sure what version was on the original US 45 or Waikikis LP. The 2:23 version has 20 seconds of a "Taps" intro played on some kind of electronic instrument followed by the 2:03 version that appears elsewhere. In other words, the 2:03 version appears to just be the longer version minus the intro. So, I'm wondering what was on the US 45. Was it the 2:03 version that appears on various compilations? Was it the 2:23 version with the "Taps" intro? Or was it something completely different? And if the 2:03 version was on the US 45, where does the longer "with intro" version come from? Is that the LP version? |

My stock copy of the original 45 (Kapp Winners Circle Series 30) runs 2:23 and includes the "Taps" intro.

This song is also on a Stardust CD in stereo and it's 2:23 with the taps intro.

Just FYI for those who have this song in stereo on a CD;
the stereo mix is the LP version. It has the organ playing continuously in one channel. On the 45, that organ is mixed almost completely out, and features only the guitar as the lead. MM |
