This is a major loss to the industry.

I agree this is a huge surprise and not a happy one. I know there are several of us on this board that are huge fans of his music. I saw him in concert four times. R.I.P. Mr. Nelson. Thanks for the wonderful music. If there is any chance of getting some of his unreleased gems finally released on CD maybe now it will happen. There are still several unreleased mixes, edits and songs that have never appeared in the digital age.

To say I'm totally shocked and saddened would be an understatement. Growing up in Minnesota, I was a fan from his first Top 40 hit, "I Wanna Be Your Lover", up through "Controversy" and "1999". When the Purple Rain movie and album exploded, I wasn't the least bit surprised. I finally felt that the rest of the world had caught up to us early fans who already knew what a genius he truly was. What a sad day. RIP.

I don't think there are many artists like Prince that
had such a profound influence on the music industry.

His music has crossed generations and those generations
are in total shock.

It's very shocking. I wonder what happened. He was taken to the hospital on April 16th, allegedly due to the flu, which I guess he's been battling for weeks. TMZ snapped a photo of him leaving Walgreens pharmacy just yesterday. I almost wonder if it was an accidental overdose of flu medication, which is how actress Brittany Murphy died.

Owen Husney showed up with a reel-to-reel tape at the promotion office at Heilicher Brothers in Golden Valley, MN one day in early 1977. Owen was a familiar face to most of us in the office, having been the leader of the High Spirits, a local band whose 45s had appeared on the company's Soma Records label in the mid '60s. He was pretty excited to share what was on the tape with the promotion staff and a couple folks from the buying office.

To say that we were awed by what came out of the speakers would be an understatement. My initial reaction was that the music was right up there with a title the company was shipping out by the boatload at the time: Songs In The Key Of Life.

When Owen dropped the bombshell that the sounds we were listening to - every instrument, every vocal part, everything! - was being performed by a seventeen-year-old north Minneapolis kid, we were blown away beyond words. "How.... you mean he....whaa??"

Simply brilliant. And that was only the beginning.

RIP, Prince.
