Was doing some spelunking on the web and came across a
(4:40) version of "Morning Girl" (and it's labeled as an
"album version"). It adds more music after the long organ
note that ends all of the CD entries.

Is this version legit, and if so would that warrant an
updating of the database?

Hi Doug,

Wow, i just love the web, and how things do travel!

The original album had "Morning Girl" as the first track
and the last cut on side 2 was called "Morning Girl,
Later" which was like a "part 2".
I made the long version by crossfading the end organ note
with the intro of "later".
Since the 4:40 time of your copy is the same, i'd bet
that is what you have.
I passed that around to some friends about 10 years ago.

Oh, when i labeled it, i called it "Part 1 & 2"

So, no, that's homemade and no database update needed.
:-)

Mark, I love that story! That's awesome. "Morning Girl" is one of my favorite tracks from the period - very different (I think) and quite beautiful.

Agreed, Frank....

For me this tune is sort of "intellectual orchestral
hippie" groovy stuff of that era. Loved it as a kid too.

I did a similar "long version" with the Moody Blues,
combining "The Day Begins" with "Nights In White Satin" so
it's one long symphonic treat. :-)

I see Wounded Bird just released (or rereleased an older Rhino Hand Made cd release) titled "Brilliant Colors: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings" and on it they list a stereo version and a "mono single version" but I do not hear any difference between the two (other than mono vs stereo) so can anyone let me know what the difference between the two might be?

Hey Pat, I did an A/B compare a few years ago and didn't hear any noticeable difference.
But what I'll do now is re-dub the 45 and sync check it to see if there might be a subtle mix difference, and post here.

Even if they are basically the same mix, I'm pleased see the comp producers at Warner are offering the mono versions of singles regardless of how different. It's shame this wasn't standard practice for all "best-of" comps at the start of the CD era.

I have the original Rhino pressing. I just ran an A-B
test on headphones and I couldn't hear any difference
between the single mix and mono-summed LP version.

The single-version waveform does look a little different,
like the peaks are less spiky, so maybe the single had
some compression.

There's a Shaun Cassidy cover of "Morning Girl" with a somewhat different lyric than Neon Philharmonic - but my understanding is that it was based on an earlier cover that changed the lyric. It didn't appear first on the Shaun Cassidy version. Does anyone know what the intermediate recording is?

Could be The Lettermen or Rick Ely... both cut their own
versions around 1971. As I don't know what the lyric
difference is, I can't comment.
