Glencoves - "Hootenanny"

Andy: I have spent some good time & effort over the years trying to track this down on anything but the original 1963 Select 724 mono 45, which I have. They had 3 follow-up singles on Select, but no LP was ever released. I believe L.I.'s Glencoves may have had an EP put out in England, but I have no other details. Hard to say if a stereo master exists. If it does, it was likely unreleased on vinyl, due to no LP. "Hootenanny" seems to appear on a 1977 Canadian Hootenanny-themed V/A LP - it's ONLY appearance on an LP that I know of. I would say this EP & LP are your only two VERY slim hopes to find stereo on it. Either could also turn out to be a re-recording, however. It isn't even on CD in mono, in any country, to my best researched knowledge. My 10-CD Ace UK Import series 1954-1963 "Golden Age Of Hot 100 American Rock 'N Roll", FEASTS on songs like "Hootenanny", but it does NOT appear. Another board, featuring re-issue compilers, has been broached on this subject. The "expert" said he believed the "Select" record label is currently privately owned, likely making it especially difficult to both locate the original master tapes, and license it for a V/A CD comp. Its non-inclusion on my import series would support that statement. Another "world-class" toughie from Mr. Chouffi. Just trying to be of help to you, sir. Good luck, Andy!

Australian import CD called "Hazy Memories Vol. 2" on
the Canetoad label. It can be ordered through Amazon
or maybe Mike at DisCollector can get it for you. I
don't know whether or not it's in stereo, but at least it made it to CD somewhere. Hope this helps.

The cd is grey area. That song is a mono needle drop on it. I dont own the cd but that is what was posted about it on BSN a while back (when i brought up a message asking about who actually owns the Select masters, and never even got an answer to that question!).

Actually, Hootenanny by the Glencoves on the ACE cd is a direct digital copy of it off of The Joy/Select Story which is put out by President Records, who owns the Joy/Select masters. Sadly, the song is a disc dub on this cd, meaning it is also a disc dub on the ACE cd as well. I was told personally that ACE felt the song sounded good enough on the Joy/Select story that it was pointless to try to find a mint 45 to master the song themselves. I disagreed, as there are some spots in the recording on the cd where some extra hiss could be heard, and i attribute that to the 45, as they were pressed on rather low quality vinyl that was fairly hissy (i own two pressings, with different letters on the label, 45K vs 45P so i suspect different pressing plants, but same sound quality).

Interestingly, I'm not entirely sure that Hootenany was actually recorded in the Fink University student center...it has a different sound quality than the B side of the 45 (which was live, while Hootenanny has no crowd noise) and the flipside doesnt have the same type of echo on it (on the handclaps), so perhaps at least some overdubbing was done in a real studio...however the overall sound quality is the same on their subsuquent releases...which were ALL better than Hootenanny, i wish they'd been with a better record company, they could've had a big career. Their 45s sound horrible though, which really prevented radio play, no doubt.
