LP version/45 version (4:08)

Hit #1 on the dance chart and was a #10 hit on Billboard. It's found on the original CD release of Atlantic's Curiosity (1986) and costs about two to three twenty dollar bills if it's available. And that's the only place on CD it exists and was released domestically. Originally written for Madonna and many have mistaken it for a Madonna hit. Doesn't appear on any 80's compilation domestically and on two Netherlands various artists comp called Smashes In Music - 16 Super Hits and Dance To The Music on the Arcade Label. I have neither CD.

For a little trivia a group called the Star Sisters in 1984 in the Netherlands recorded the song first for their album Danger in 1985 and then rerecorded it in 1987 after Regina's became a hit. It was shorter (3:18) without the baby sounds and was not released as a single.

Surprised no one has brought this song up on topic. Let me be the first. Honestly I am surprised that since 1986 no one has tried to license this song for any compilation. Was it that difficult? Another true one hit wonder...

That cover looks awfully familiar. I seem to think I have a 12" single of that still in the box.

I took a listen to the Star Sisters with the link you provided. I could have sworn I was listening to Sandra. She and her hubby did a number of tunes along with hubert Kah. But, that's all euro stuff. :)

Sounds like a new candidate for yet another ERIC release!

I have the song on a US 1987 CD. The title is Dance
Traxx Volume Two on the Atlantic label (81746). Pat has
it listed in the online database. The song runs 6:29
which is the extended dance mix that appeared on the 12"
single. I do not have that 12" single but on the flip
side was the 7" version and a dub version. I wonder if
that extended version can be edited to match the 45. I
had no idea it was a cover.

Not sure if the extended dance mix could be edited into the 7 " single. Still hasn't made an official compilation appearance here domestically yet, which is odd considering all the 80's compilations (Sounds of the 80's, Omigod, Rhino Top Hits etc)

I can tell you why this has never appeared on any V/A
comps after about 1990. Regina Richards owns the full
rights to the recording and won't allow any reissues.

We tried on 2 occasions to license it for the Eric
Records 80s CDs. Both times got an immediate decline.

From what I was told, she never wanted to record it in
the first place. She co-wrote it with Stephen Bray and
was intended for Madonna or any other artist to
record. But Atlantic pressured her into singing it
herself. After that she was unhappy that it basically
sounded like a Madonna copy and she took a lot of flak
for that in reviews.

Despite its success and despite recording for a few
more years she left the recording side of the industry
in the early 90s with no desire to return and no
desire to ever see the song reissued - anywhere.

That was the info I was given.

Also, the 12" version is a remix so it cannot be
edited to make the 45/LP version.

You would think that with all the licensing fees to be made during the 1990's and 2000's when the CD was at its prime and compilations were coming out yearly (Time Life, etc) that Regina would have made money on it.

This would be a perfect track for an Eric Records, rare 80's comp, along with Hold On To My Love by Jimmy Ruffin. These top 10 hits deserve a domestic release.

Sucks when an artist holds a song hostage. As far as the Madonna sound alike she wasn't wrong...

Amazon claims to have a V/A collection that has it. It's a label from across the pond.

Format: CD

Release Date: 2007

Label: PTG Records

UPC: 8717438196398

By the cover, it's called "Disco Giants 2." A couple years ago, I bought a boxed set of these which are still in a box somewhere. It's a set of Volumes 1 - 10. If I can find it, I'll post details
about what the version sounds like but, I'm betting it's a needledrop from a 12" single. I remember there were a number of tracks that were extended versions. But worth a look if I find it.

Yes, it's a 12" from the comment at the bottom of the description:

"The Vinyl Masterpiece label's second volume of 20 rare 80's classic extended 12 inch vinyl mixes from artists including Jesse Johnson, Jeffrey Osborne, Kool & the Gang, Fatback, Sheryl Lee Ralph & many more."

The single version can be found on the vinyl LP issue
of "Dance Traxx Volume Two" (The LP contained all of
the single edits, but the CD was all extended
versions).

I just compared both and you can edit the extended
version to match the single... with some creativity.
In the second chorus just before the bridge, the
background singers' "...just-call-me" part is missing
from the extended version. The first chorus in the
extended version does have this part though, so you'd
just have to paste that line into the second chorus.
