From one of jimct's great posts from a few years back
(printed times): Whitney Houston-"So Emotional" (ASCD-9641) 1-Single Version (4:00) 2-Extended Remix (7:45) 3-Edited Remix (listed time 4:36; actually 4:23) 4-Dub Version (5:10) 5-Bonus Beats (4:24) 6-The Voice (4:10) To recreate the Single Version (also used on the US 45) from the album version on Whitney: Keep 0.00.0-2.05.3 of the album version. Edit on downbeat. Remove the 32 beats from 2:05.3 to 2:21.4. Keep 2.21.4-4.16.2 of the album version. Put a 32-beat sinusoidal fade from 4.00.1-4.16.2. Your mixdown will run 4:00, with an edit at 2:05 and a 32-beat fade from 3:44 to 4:00. |

Tried to recreate the 45 and mine has a little hitch at the 2:05 mark. I went
looking for the maxi single and it runs 500 bucks....ummm...no thanks..LOL |

The version I always heard on the radio was the edited remix. Plus it was very popular in the 90's here in New York compares to the 45 version.

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

The one Top 40 station in my area usually played the regular mix of "So Emotional", but I remember one time while I was out for the day and listening to the radio on my Walkman, a different mix of the song came on and I remember thinking, "What is this?" I liked it, but I believe they went back to playing the regular version soon thereafter. I collected Cassette Singles/Maxi-Singles at the time, and when I got the Maxi, I realized what I heard that one time was the "Edited Remix". About 10 years later, I was lucky enough to find the promo CD Single in a store in Center City Philly. I forget what I paid for it, but I never in a million years would have imagined that decades later, it would be going for several hundred dollars like Ron S. mentioned. Glad I found it when I did.
I forget the specific thread, but I believe someone here mentioned that the "Edited Remix" was released as the commercial single in the UK. |

Dan, I'll bet you it was "The Sound of Market" or the
"Funk-O-Mart" where you saw that cd, because I remember seeing it all those years ago on the shelf there. WHY I PASSED IT UP I'LL NEVER KNOW! I remember the store was inthe basement of a building on Market St. Edited by Kiefer2 |

I was surprised to find that this maxi-single has, at some point recently, hit US streaming and digital storefronts(!). It's available at iTunes and Qobuz, probably other places as well.
The digital release contains the same tracks as the promo CD single, so this would include the US 45 "Single Version" as well as the popular "Edited Remix". |

Sound of Market had the music upstairs or atleast it was in
later years. I loved that store; it's my all-time favorite. I don't think buyers/collectors knew just how few promo cds and cd singles were issued. Tough to find and for limited time frames. |

I seem to remember the front of the store facing Market Street, and I'm pretty sure the Whitney Promo was on the same floor as the entrance to the store, not in a basement, but I could be wrong. I don't remember noticing the name of the store, but it was more likely The Funk-O-Mart because I went to Sound Of Market fairly often, and I'd have been more likely to remember getting it there. Sound Of Market technically was one street down after Market on 11th Street. I don't remember seeing any promos at Sound Of Market, but then I wasn't specifically looking for them, either. If they had what I wanted, I would buy it. They had some great stuff there, though. I definitely miss it and the Tower Records stores that used to be in Philly. |

I remember the bottom floor where you walked in from 11th Street had stereo equipment and such. The next floor up was mostly R&B artists, CD's and some vinyl. I think they also had 12" singles on that floor. The next floor up was Rock/Pop/Adult Contemporary and other genres.
I worked for The Wall Music Inc. in the 90's, which eventually evolved into the FYE stores you see today. We would get promos in all the time, but all the ones I saw were full albums. I didn't realize at the time that singles were also being issued on promos, and that many of them contained mixes that were being played on the radio, but weren't available commercially. In fact, the "So Emotional" promo is probably the first promo CD Single I ever came across. There was also another used CD store at 2nd & Market Streets that had a bargain section ($5 and under, I think), and I noticed they had promos in there too. I remember going to that store in 2000 and feeling so happy that I found the promo of Prince's "Batdance", because the Single Version hadn't appeared on CD up to that point. Another time at that store I found the promos for Waterfront's "Cry", Animotion's "Room To Move" and Ivan Neville's "Not Just Another Girl" and they were all $1 each as I recall and I felt like I hit pay dirt!
