the commercial 45 contains a remix of this song which actually runs 4:20 while the 45's label states a run time of 4:15...the label says "mixed by michael hutchman & fred zarr".....the only place i've been able to find the correct 45 version is on the atlantic promo cd single issued as atlantic 2436-2....this promo actually contains a few tracks from that time period...one of them is the debbie gibson track....i've included a note from paul which he had on another thread

Debbie Gibson - Staying Together ==> Album version - 4:04. (Whitburn - 4:15) (available on vinyl 45)

this should be noted in the db....

I think I found another source for the 45 version.

The promo CD single in Ed's post is PR 2436-2 (1988), which has:
  1. Robert Plant - Ship Of Fools (Edit) [4:10 including outro silence]
  2. Robert Plant - Ship Of Fools (LP version) [5:02 including outro silence]
  3. Nu Shooz - Are You Lookin' For Somebody Nu (Edit) [4:00 including outro silence]
  4. Nu Shooz - Are You Lookin' For Somebody Nu (Remix) [8:49 including outro silence]
  5. Debbie Gibson - Staying Together (LP Version - Vocal Recut) [actual 4:19]
  6. Debbie Gibson - Staying Together (Remix) [6:00 including outro silence]
This six-track promo CD is pretty hard to find, and the 45 version is labeled explicitly as "LP Version - Vocal Recut".

I found the same version on Atlantic's Year In Review: 1988 (Atlantic PR 2566-2, printed 4:15, actual 4:16), which is probably even harder to find than the six-track CD.

FYI: I noticed that the LP version on Atlantic's Greatest Hits (1995) is digitally exactly 0.3 dB quieter than the version on Atlantic's Out Of The Blue (1987).

For those of you that care about mastering, I noticed that the 1995 Greatest Hits is largely digital clones of the earlier Atlantic CDs.

Here are the details:

These tracks on Atlantic's Greatest Hits (1995) are digitally exactly 0.3 dB quieter than Atlantic's Out Of The Blue (1987):
  • "Only In My Dreams"
  • "Shake Your Love"
  • "Out Of The Blue"
  • "Foolish Beat"
  • "Staying Together"
This track on Atlantic's Greatest Hits (1995) is digitally exactly 0.3 dB quieter than Atlantic's Electric Youth (1989):
  • "Lost In Your Eyes"
This track on Atlantic's Greatest Hits (1995) is a different EQ than Atlantic's Electric Youth (1989) [samples line up but don't cancel completely in null test]:
  • "Electric Youth"
This track on Atlantic's Greatest Hits (1995) is digitally exactly 1.5 dB louder than Atlantic's Electric Youth (1989):
  • "No More Rhyme"
This track on Atlantic's Greatest Hits (1995) is a different EQ than Atlantic's Year In Review: 1990 (and, I would guess, Anything Is Possible, but I can't confirm):
  • "Anything Is Possible"
The last three tracks on Greatest Hits are extended versions.

Nine hits, nine digital clones. The Greatest Hits obviously contains the LP versions of everything, and doesn't have the single versions of "Only In My Dreams" or "Staying Together".

It looks there may be two different commercial 45 pressings of Debbie Gibson's "Staying Together" (Atlantic 7-89034) because Abagon reports his copy has an actual run time of 4:17. The printed record label time is 4:15, just like Ed's copy. The matrix number on Abagon's 45 is a lengthy one: STA-55589-4 F1w HErbIE (?)(?)   (?) R-20957-4 (Triangle mark) 21581 1-1.

I'm still not convinced that some of these small differences in running times (in this case, 1.36%) might not be due to different turntable speeds or not being able to hear the exact point of fadeout due to record noise. But, as Debbie Gibson says, "Anything is Possible."

Brian:

I suppose it's possible some of the run time discrepencies between 45s that have come up on the message board could be due to the reasons you state. This is why I've been making it a point to list the matrix numbers in these instances. That way, if the matrix numbers of the two pressings match up, then it can probably be concluded that somebody's turntable or stop watch is slightly off. But if the matrix numbers are different, then I think the time differences are probably legitimate.

In this case with "Staying Together", I notice Ed's 4:20 reported run time is more in line with the song's length on the promo CD single release, while Abagon's 4:17 reported time more closely corresponds to the length on Ron's Atlantic's Year In Review: 1988 CD. This leads me to believe there are two 45 pressings with different lengths here.

To the greatest forum members in the world, lol: Would anyone be willing to share this single version? I would especially love to have this particular track as a wave file rip if at all possible! :)
