Thought I'd paste the Warner Bros. press release for Madonna's upcoming compilation "Celebration". There might be some previously commercially or completely unavailable 45 versions on CD, we'll see. July 23, 2009 - For Immediate Release (Burbank, California) - Madonna, who has racked up a record 37 top 10 hits as well as seven No. 1 albums (including her last four) on the Billboard Pop Charts, has given her fans yet another opportunity to “celebrate” her musical achievements. Today, Warner Bros. Records officially confirmed the September 28th release in the U.S. (September 29 outside U.S.) of “CELEBRATION” – the ultimate compilation of Madonna songs. The songs on “Celebration” have all been remastered and selected by Madonna and her fans. They cover the expanse of the Material Girl’s extraordinary career of hits including “Everybody,” “Express Yourself,” “Vogue” and “4 Minutes.” “Celebration” will be available in a two-CD set as well as a single CD. There will also be a “Celebration” DVD released simultaneously which includes the video visionary’s best videos including several that have never before been available on DVD. “Celebration,” the CD will also include two new songs that were recently recorded in New York City. The first single, also titled, “Celebration,” co-produced by Madonna and Paul Oakenfold, will be released August 3rd. A video for the single, which will be included on the “Celebration” DVD was just filmed in Milan, Italy and was directed by long time Madonna collaborator Jonas (“Ray of Light”) Akerlund. Several dance club remixes of “Celebration” are already headed to the clubs. The song will also be available on CD and vinyl maxi. Radio will receive the “Celebration” single on August 3rd. The cover for “Celebration” was created by street pop artist “Mr. Brainwash” who is best known for “throwing modern cultural icons into a blender and turning it up to eleven.” Madonna, a multi Grammy award winning singer, writer and producer has had over 12 No. 1 singles and has a record-smashing 39 No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs Chart – by far the most of any artist in the over 30 year history of the list. ![]() |

The leadoff single, "Celebration," was rush-released to Amazon this evening after it leaked on the Perez Hilton website this morning.
It's just fair. It's certainly no "4 Minutes." It sounds like something from her first album, with fun, kind of dopey lyrics, but no worse than "Hung Up," I don't suppose. I'm sure it'll make the top 40, since no advance single from a Madonna album has ever failed to do so. Anyway, the official 45 version is labeled "Album Version," running an actual 3:34. It sure would be great if "Borderline" is the 45 version, which has only been released on CD on the expensive Japanese singles box. I have a CDR of this version (thanks to someone on this board) but I'd buy this 2-CD set just to have this on an original CD.
Too bad they left off "True Blue", though. |

So these won't be those awful Q-Sound Versions on the Immaculate Collection will they? I hope that Vogue, Borderline, and Cherish are the single versions.
Does anyone know if there is going to be a vinyl release? If the do right this time, they should've called it "The Immaculate Correction!" LOL - OK very bad. |

Previews for each track are available on the Amazon France website and another European online retailer called CeDe (the compilation is released tomorrow in Europe).
From what I heard, here are the insufferable Immaculate Collection remixes which make their way again: "Vogue", "Like a Virgin", "Open your Heart", "Borderline", "Lucky Star", and "Crazy for You". The previews for "Express Yourself" sound like the remix/edit but with a shorter running time. An early owner of the compilation confirms it clocks in at 4:00 and has the intro used in the videos and "Local Mix", so it looks like we get a "Celebration" specific new mix. For "Cherish", the preview does not play the IC remix, and lists track time as 3:50 (which matches the running time of IC version closer than the original 7" version). So this may be another new mix/fade. Same with "Everybody". It sounds like the original version and listed as 4:10 which does not match the original edit running time of 3:58. "Into The Groove" is the original version. The rest of the previews sound like the album or edit versions, and closely match their running times. Looks like no original 45 versions make their CD debut on this compilation. You can also hear a preview of the second new song "Revolver". Here's a track by track description from the Amazon clips and running times as reference: Disc: 1 1. Hung Up (album version) 2. Music (album version) 3. Vogue (IC remix) 4. 4 Minutes (edit) 5. Holiday (album version) 6. Everybody (new edit/mix) 7. Like A Virgin (IC remix) 8. Into The Groove (original version) 9. Like A Prayer (album version) 10. Ray Of Light (edit) 11. Sorry (edit) 12. Express Yourself (new edit/mix) 13. Open Your Heart (IC remix) 14. Borderline (IC remix) 15. Secret (edit) 16. Erotica (edit) 17. Justify My Love (album version) 18. Revolver Disc: 2 1. Dress You Up (album version) 2. Material Girl (album version) 3. La Isla Bonita (album version) 4. Papa Don't Preach (album version) 5. Lucky Star (IC remix) 6. Burning Up (3:41 album version) 7. Crazy For You (IC remix) 8. Who's That Girl (album version) 9. Frozen (album version) 10. Miles Away (edit) 11. Take A Bow (album version) 12. Live To Tell (album version) 13. Beautiful Stranger (album version) 14. Hollywood (album version) 15. Die Another Day (album version) 16. Don't Tell Me (edit) 17. Cherish (new edit/mix) 18. Celebration (original version) |

I was about to post this myself. Yes, it's sad. But it is the album debut of the original version of "Into the Groove" and also the CD debut of the "unmixed" album-length version of "Hung Up." (Which I already had in lossless, thanks to MusicGiants.)

Well, if the mastering is decent then it would be nice to get a good sounding version of the original "Into The Groove" on CD. But the rest of the collection is an utter disappointment. I wonder if anyone at the label is even aware that the 45 version of "Borderline" is a unique mix? It's so frustrating that this superior version is continually ignored when the song is reissued on CD, outside of the ultra-rare Japanese box. |

Yes, it was available on a CD single. That single may have been an import, though; I can't recall. In any event, the sound quality was mediocre at best, sounding like it was from a higher generation source. I did a high quality needledrop from the 12" single for this song. Also, "Into The Groove" was included on the old West German CD of "Like A Virgin". |

Before its inclusing in "Celebration", the original version of "Into The Groove" was released on several import CD sources and one in the US:
*Into The Groove/Who's That Girl/Causing A Commotion 3" german CD single (921 141-2) *Into The Groove/Who's That Girl/Causing A Commotion 5" german CD single (7599211412) reissue of the above in 5" format *Like A Virgin post 1989 reissue german CD album (7599-25181-2) *Backtrax series USA CD single (2-539) *Material Girl, Angel and Into The Groove Japan EP (WPCP-5063) *Into The Groove german CD single (7599 2035-2) 1995 reissue of original german 12" single *Angel german CD single (7599 20335-2) 1995 reissue of original german 12" single *CD Single Collection (WPDR-3100-3139) Japan box set There are mastering and quality differences among these. Some fade out a few seconds earlier, I remember we discussed this in older threads. The Japan sources are the best in my opinion. Edited by elcoleccionista |

<Borderline (IC remix) >
What a shame. I have the actual single mix on CDR (from the Japanese $300 CD singles box set - due to person in this chatboard), but I would have paid for this double CD, just to have this right mix on an original CD. But Warner Bros loses more sales, because they just don't take a few minutes to get it right. Due to time constrictions, I didn't think the 6-minute album version of Borderline would be included here, and those IC remixes were blasted all over the press and internet (I think) - so I really thought there was a good shot at getting this song - and others - in their proper single versions here. The majors mess it up again. |

I just gave the 2 CD version a scan and here's the version playlist according to what I hear.
Disc: 1 1. Hung Up (unmixed album version, first time on a commercial US CD. previously available on US promo CD PRO-CD-101648) 2. Music (album version) 3. Vogue (Immaculate Collection remix) 4. 4 Minutes (edit)(first time on a commercial US CD. previously available on US promo CD PRO-CDR-446652) 5. Holiday (album version) 6. Everybody (a new version that uses the extended version as the original 45 as source, but the edit points are different) 7. Like A Virgin (Immaculate Collection remix) 8. Into The Groove (original version with full outro) 9. Like A Prayer (album version) 10. Ray Of Light (edit) 11. Sorry (edit) 12. Express Yourself (a new version that uses the local mix and remix/edit as sources. the editing structure is brandnew, a different one was used for the Immaculate Collection remix. without disrespect, as with "Everybody", you can recreate better edits at home). 13. Open Your Heart (Immaculate Collection remix) 14. Borderline (Immaculate Collection remix) 15. Secret (edit) 16. Erotica (edit, or that was the idea. At one of the original 45's edit points, at 3:29 approx, they missed it and it sounds as the CD skips. Maybe this is a problem with only the European mastering. Many users have reported it so it's not a problem with just one copy) INCREDIBLE... 17. Justify My Love (album version) 18. Revolver Disc: 2 1. Dress You Up (album version but for apparently no reason they cut the first four snare drums to only one, and it has some special effect added. huh?) 2. Material Girl (album version) 3. La Isla Bonita (album version) 4. Papa Don't Preach (album version) 5. Lucky Star (Immaculate Collection remix) 6. Burning Up (3:41 album version) 7. Crazy For You (Immaculate Collection remix) 8. Who's That Girl (album version) 9. Frozen (album version) 10. Miles Away (edit) 11. Take A Bow (album version) 12. Live To Tell (album version) 13. Beautiful Stranger (album version) 14. Hollywood (album version) 15. Die Another Day (album version) 16. Don't Tell Me (edit, first time on a commercial US CD. previously available on US promo CD PRO-CD-100510) 17. Cherish (new mix that as far as I can tell simply edits the album version using the Immaculate Collection remix edit points and fade out) 18. Celebration (original version) Obviously there is no criteria followed to chose the versions, sounds more like random and let's use whatever master is closer at hand. Some owners of the 1 disc version are reporting a new edit of "Frozen" as opposed to this set which uses the album version. Talk about random. There is a front sticker that says "digitally remastered from the original tapes!". Right. Many tracks suffer from loudness excess but most everything does these days. Nice work, thanks : P Edited by elcoleccionista |

Wow, that sounds like a very sloppily assembled compilation. Pretty surprising for such a big name act. Makes you wonder what's going on at the label for such shoddy product to be released on one of their biggest names. I'll be giving this one a wide berth. |

Production credit errors from the booklet... The production of "La Isla Bonita" is credited to Madonna, William Orbit, and Patrick Leonard (the song was produced by her and Leonard. William Orbit would first collaborate with Madonna in l990 for a "Justify My Love" remix). No production credits for "Papa don't Preach" listed. After the song's writer and publisher credit paragraph, instead of production credits, they listed writer and publisher again (it was produced by Madonna and Stephen Bray). "Die Another Day" production is credited to Madonna & William Orbit. The track was actually produced by her and Mirwais Ahmadzaï. |

I haven't listened to each song in its entirety and don't plan to for now, but I read on a forum someone mentioning the "Frozen" "Celebration" version was extended, so was curious.
As a matter of fact he's right, there is an extra compass at the end of the song after she says "your heart..." and before the melody structure changes. It's hard to explain without the sound, but in the "Ray of Light" version there are two compasses between those sections, and there is a synth sound that fades a little too quickly from one compass to the other. In the "Celebration" mix, there are three compasses, and the synth sound fades out smoothly in the second compass into the third one. The second one is missing on the album version, as though the "Celebration" one were the original and the other one edited from it. Whether this was random, go figure, but interesting. If anybody would like to hear it, I created an mp3 mixing both parts from the same start point, and they go out of synch about 12 seconds after. Edited by elcoleccionista |
