The stereo version on Motown Year By Year 1969 (1995) is currently listed as "LP version", but should be "neither LP nor 45 version".

The Year By Yearversion has Gladys singing the word "well" six times from 0:26 to 0:33. The LP version doesn't have any vocals from 0:26 to 0:33.

There may be other differences as well. I didn't check all that carefully after I found the 0:26-0:33 difference.

The Motown Year By Year series has had a few previously unreleased mixes, which is interesting for collectors, but not so helpful if you're trying to find the hit versions.
There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Ron:
It may actually be the mono 45 you're describing (Gladys sings "well" six times on the mono version on that Rhino soul box). Maybe that Motown CD used the 45 version?

Great catch, Ron.

It seems those seemingly great Year By Year CDs contained an
"odd/unique" version here and there. The thing is, I never noticed the
difference until I read your post today. It sounds like they did a stereo mix of
the 45, but as you, I didn't check the entire song.

Of note, the quad version of Jackson 5 - ABC is on the 1970 volume.

"Train" first appeared in on a (stereo) LP in early 1970 on "Greatest Hits", so
seems like it's one of those instances where when they did the stereo after
the 45 was a hit (although not that long after...), they didn't match the 45.

"Gold" CD contains the original stereo version.

For some strange reason, I can't post the link without it having a blank
inserted. Remove it, and you'll get to the CD.

In this forum, line breaks are inserted wherever the text wraps in the text box you type into. To post with longer lines, just expand the text box (click/drag the tab on the lower right). Reduce your browser's font size (e.g. with ctrl+minus or ctrl+mousewheel) enough and you can stretch the text box such that even a long paragraph should fit on a single line.

Also, Discogs URLs only need the release ID number to work; the text afterward is just for search engine optimization.
