I have the Robbie Patton (with Stevie Nicks) Atlantic 45 of the tune "Smiling Islands." Does anyone know if there is a CD on this planet that has this track? I haven't been able to find one.
Thanks.

By the way, this single dates to 1983.

Last time I checked, no.

I even had to track down a mint vinyl copy of his top-40 hit "Don't Give It Up" when I heard the 'gray area' CD containing this hit was mastered from vinyl.

I believe the same goes for "Smiling Islands", a terrific song.

I agree, guys - great song. Our station did a "custom edit" on it, looping Stevie's one verse into the song two extra times, I believe, while removing some of Robbie. Didn't have time to grab a dub back then - had 4 jobs at the time!

Robbie's entire 1982 parent LP with "Smiling Islands" on it is available on qobuz. I never heard the song before until now. Not bad.

I've got that all-Stevie version from the radio station !! And even made my own from editing the 45. The local easy
listening radio station here in Richmond played it in regular rotation back in the day. I heard it, went out and bought
the 45, and was SHOCKED, SHOCKED I tell you, that it wasn't the all-Stevie version they were playing. Called up the DJ, he
said yeah, it was a special version created by some OTHER radio station, who had sent them a copy. He kindly made me a
cassette dub of it and mailed it over. Really nice...

The original recording is like this:

Intro, Robbie Patton sings verse 1, chorus 1, verse 2, chorus 2, bridge, repeat intro. Then Stevie comes in during the
repeat intro with an "ooo-hoo", and repeats verse 1 and verse 2 (no choruses), and a final "smiling islands" tag, fades
out.

The edited all-Stevie radio version uses the post bridge repeat intro with Stevie's "ooo-hoo" as the intro, then Stevie
verse 1, Robbie chorus 1, Stevie verse 2, Robbie chorus 2, Robbie bridge, then the all-Stevie ending of repeat intro with
her "ooo-hoo", verse 1, verse 2, final "smiling islands" tag, fade.

Did I mention it was really nice?

The Promo copy of 'Smiling Islands' says Short Version on the label and 3:40. It does indeed run that length.
Nowhere on the Wounded Bird CD of 'Orders from Headquarters' does it give a printed time, but I come up with 4:32.

Bill:

Is the promo 45 an early fade or edit?

Edit. Rick recreated it from the LP.
Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

Yes, all the edits are in the instrumental sections of the song. All of the verses
and choruses are intact. There is a speed difference also. About 1 second faster
every minute. -Bill.
