A friend gave me this info regarding Manfred Mann's Earth Band's "Spirit In the Night". Once Chris Thompson joined the group, this song was re-recorded with his lead vocals, and THAT'S the version that became the #40 Billboard hit. The Chris Thompson vocal recording has a long version (on the LP) and a single edit. This single edit (with Chris' voice) is now available on this CD:

I thought that the single version made the second pressing of the "Roaring Silence" LP.

What was the Chris Thompson LP version length?

Sorry--I shouldn't have added to the thread, as the info I gave was not really correct.

Is there a delete feature on this board?

I only own a promo 45 for the Billboard #40 peaking "hit" version of this song. Both the mono/stereo sides have a listed time of (3:20), but both sides have an actual time of (3:15). Perhaps someone owning a WB 8355 stock copy can provide its timing details. My promo 45's labels state the title of the song simply as "Spirit." WB then inserted a "looks-like-a-post-card" insert inside the sleeve. The card says, "The correct title should be 'Spirit In The Night' - WBS 8355". Didn't see that done too often during my years in radio! And Gordon, thanks for the "where-to-obtain-the-edit-v-on-CD" info in your initial post, which I never saw before. Gonna try and track it down right now!

Are you sure this is correct? I've got promo 45s of both of the two early versions (Warner Bros. 8152 and 8176), and 8152 is the one with "Spirit" on the label and the card stuck inside the sleeve with the information about the correct title. Though certainly possible, I don't think Warners would make the same mistake twice!

Tim, I have just pulled my promo 45, card and all, and have re-confirmed for you all of my WBS 8355 promo 45/card insert details. It is all true, and was not a typo. It appears that lightning has INDEED struck twice here. Great stuff on the WBS 8152 45 also having a card stuck inside!

I just dug out my promos, and the anomalies just keep on comin'! While I don't have WB 8152, I do have a stereo/stereo copy of 8176 (6:26/3:13) which indicates being from the "Nightingales And Bombers" album on the long side. The master numbers are [long](TAA 6869)S and [edited](TAA 6869)VIIS. This Columbia (Santa Maria) pressing states a recording publishing date of "1976 Warner Bros. Records Inc."

All four of my Capitol-pressed 3:20 promo copies of WB 8355 (with the Bronze logo added) show master #(TAA 6869) VIII / VIIIS, along with "RE-1."

Three of the four WB 8355s are titled "Spirit," and of these, two have the cards stuck in the sleeves, and one does not. There is no LP mention on either the stereo or mono sides. All three have a recording publishing date of "1975 Warner Bros. Records Inc."

The fourth WB 8355 promo shows the corrected title, "Spirit In The Night." Both mono and stereo sides note "From the Warner Bros. album BSK 3055 The Roaring Silence." This copy's recording publishing date and copyright owner credit is completely different from the other 8355s: "1977 Bronze Records Limited."

"Spirits" must have literally been flowing at Warners when all of these singles came out.

it's been over 5 YEARS since the question was asked as to
what the commercial vinyl 45's running time
was....well...my commercial 45 issued as warner 8355 lists
a run time on the label as 3:20 but actually runs
3:15.......can anyone confirm that the correct, proper 45
version appears on cd below as edisonlite states in the
beginning?
