I couldn't tell if this has been discussed before (it's really hard to search on "A List"...)
Around 2003, I got a copy of a 50-CD set for radio called "The A List", which is a pretty definitive '80s pop collection - 700+ tracks, all of them hits from 1979-1989. It was put out in 1994 by a company that's no longer around (Swaitek, I think), and I've never seen another copy other than the one I own. Amazingly, it's got the hit versions of nearly everything - Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Janet, etc. I was hoping to find out a little more about how such things are put together. There are about 20 tracks clearly taken from vinyl, but everything else seems to be fairly clean or pretty well de-noised. Does anybody else know anything about "The A List"? In particular, I want to know where they got their source material, since there are some mixes and edits on there that have never surfaced on CD before. And just for giggles, here's the track listing for all 767 tracks (parsed funny with commas from my spreadsheet): Hold The Line - Toto Sad Eyes - John, Robert Cruel To Be Kind - Lowe, Nick My Life - Joel, Billy I Want You To Want Me - Cheap Trick Dance The Night Away - Van Halen Every Time I Think Of You - Babys Lady - Little River Band Logical Song, The - Supertramp Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Jackson, Michael Fire - Pointer Sisters Send One Your Love - Wonder, Stevie Bad Case Of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) - Palmer, Robert Babe - Styx Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' - Journey What A Fool Believes - Doobie Brothers Never Knew Love Like This Before - Mills, Stephanie Chuck E.'s In Love - Jones, Rickie Lee Coming Up - McCartney, Paul Love Takes Time - Orleans Let's Go - Cars Give Me The Night - Benson, George Mama Can't Buy You Love - John, Elton Woman In Love - Streisand, Barbra Honesty - Joel, Billy Magic - Newton-John, Olivia Just When I Needed You Most - Vanwarmer, Randy Look What You've Done To Me - Scaggs, Boz Heart Of The Night - Poco We've Got Tonight - Seger, Bob Lotta Love - Larson, Nicolette Tired Of Toein' The Line - Burnette, Rocky Tide Is High, The - Blondie He's So Shy - Pointer Sisters Little Jeannie - John, Elton Let Me Love You Tonight - Pure Prairie League Into The Night - Mardones, Benny Cars - Numan, Gary We Don't Talk Anymore - Richard, Cliff It's Still Rock And Roll To Me - Joel, Billy Special Lady - Ray Goodman and Brown Let My Love Open The Door - Townshend, Pete She's Out Of My Life - Jackson, Michael Romeo's Tune - Forbert, Steve Sailing - Cross, Christopher Working My Way Back To You/Forgive Me, Girl - Spinners Touch And Go - Cars Hit Me With Your Best Shot - Benatar, Pat Dreaming - Richard, Cliff I Can't Tell You Why - Eagles Brass In Pocket - Pretenders Upside Down - Ross, Diana Biggest Part Of Me - Ambrosia Ninety-Nine - Toto Misunderstanding - Genesis Jesse - Simon, Carly You May Be Right - Joel, Billy Think About Me - Fleetwood Mac Pilot Of The Airwaves - Dore, Charlie All Out Of Love - Air Supply Fame - Cara, Irene I'm Alright - Loggins, Kenny Wondering Where The Lions Are - Cockburn, Bruce Take A Little Rhythm - Thomson, Ali Rock With You - Jackson, Michael Third Time Lucky (First Time I Was A Fool) - Foghat Don't Do Me Like That - Petty, Tom And The Heartbreakers Dreamer - Supertramp I Wanna Be Your Lover - Prince Another One Bites The Dust - Queen This Is It - Loggins, Kenny Lost In Love - Air Supply Ride Like The Wind - Cross, Christopher You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling - Hall, Daryl And John Oates Against The Wind - Seger, Bob Suddenly - Newton-John, Olivia and Cliff Richard Steal Away - Dupree, Robbie Sara - Fleetwood Mac Too Hot - Kool And The Gang I Love You - Climax Blues Band You're The Only Woman (You & I) - Ambrosia Just The Two Of Us - Washington, Grover Jr. Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You) - Air Supply Don't Ask Me Why - Joel, Billy Rose, The - Midler, Bette Escape (The Piņa Colada Song) - Holmes, Rupert Late In The Evening - Simon, Paul Celebration - Kool And The Gang Crazy Little Thing Called Love - Queen Lady (You Bring Me Up) - Commodores Watching The Wheels - Lennon, John I Missed Again - Collins, Phil One That You Love, The - Air Supply Precious To Me - Seymour, Phil Pop Muzik - M Who's Crying Now - Journey Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - Police Theme From The Greatest American Hero (Believe It Or Not) - Scarbury, Joey This Little Girl - Bonds, Gary U.S. Start Me Up - Rolling Stones All Those Years Ago - Harrison, George Living Inside Myself - Vannelli, Gino Hey Nineteen - Steely Dan Cool Love - Pablo Cruise Endless Love - Ross, Diana and Lionel Richie Stop Draggin' My Heart Around - Nicks, Stevie with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers I Can't Stand It - Clapton, Eric Kiss On My List - Hall, Daryl And John Oates Woman - Lennon, John Her Town Too - Taylor, James And J. Although I'm not familiar with this particular set, there are/were many radio-only music libraries with similar track lists. I happen to own a collection from TM Century, which is one of the largest providers of broadcast material (music libraries, jingles, production music, etc).
I know in the case of TM Century, they did some vinyl transfers and a TON of homemade edits to get the "hit" versions. BEWARE! I've spent countless hours going through the homemade edits on TM's library (even the newer, revised versions of the discs), and there are countless examples of careless mistakes. I'd be willing to bet that more than 75% of the homemade edits on TM's library are incorrect. Does Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" run 3:45 and have an extra synth at 1:58? The hit 45 version of this one is edited and has a synth overdub that the LP doesn't have. Does "Thriller" have the rapless ending like on the 45? Does "Another Part Of Me" have the 45 remix or is it the same mix as the LP? Does Janet Jackson's "Nasty" run 3:44 like the 45? Is Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That" the hit 45 remix or is it the LP edit? Does Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" run 4:07 like the 45, or is it the shorter 3:59 LP version? Be careful in assuming you have the "hit" versions of all these songs until you've investigated their homemade edits. Many of these companies did a rush job of putting them together, and didn't take extra care to get it exactly right. I've even found instances on my TM discs where the song appears to be correct (i.e. it has the correct run time and correct sections edited out), but when doing a careful comparison to the actual vinyl 45, I found that the edit point was off by a measure or two. For example, "Lucky Star" on their disc is the same length as the 45, but the intro is not edited the same way as the 45. Someone put the edit point in the wrong spot. |

AaronK - Thanks for responding! Interesting!
I've wondered about the TM Century collections; my only firsthand experience with them was a Golddisc 3 sampler that I got when I was at my college station. "Nothing else sounds as good as Dolddisc 3." ("NoNoise"?? Ack!!) I, too, have spent many an hour dissecting the A-List tracks. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with the edits, although there are a few clunkers: Billy Ocean's "When The Going Gets Tough" is maimed, Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" is a shorter edit that cuts off the whistly intro and the mumbling, going straight from the horns into the first verse, M's "Pop Muzik" is the LP version, U2's "Desire" is an odd remix (the 12"?), Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes" is the right length but a strange mix, and so forth. A few early-to-mid '80s tracks taken from vinyl: 45 versions of "You Spin Me Round", "I Wanna Be A Cowboy", "Along Comes A Woman", the 2 Naked Eyes hits, "Key Largo", "Turn Me Loose", and a few others. The Madonna tracks sound like the 45 versions (unlike "The Immaculate Collection"), although I haven't done A/B comparisons with the 45s. Same with the Janet Jackson tracks. These all sound pretty clean, like they were taken from CD sources, although I can't figure out from where. On the whole, though, they did a decent job of versions that would appeal to programmers. I'm not sure about "I Can't Go For That" or "Sexual Healing" - we music geeks would know which is which but I don't think the average listener would. "Thriller" is the LP version, which is really the only one I heard on the air back then. "The Safety Dance" is the 45 version, taken from vinyl. I'd prefer the LP version of "Turn Me Loose", but I just like talking over a 60-second intro. They gave me the medley of "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go", taken from vinyl. (I have a decent copy of that on a promo-only CMJ 1979-1989 sampler, but that's the only place I've ever seen it.) I've been comparing the A List tracks to some reputable compilation CDs (Rhino, Time-Life, Razor & Tie...) and noticed that virtually all the tracks are a tiny bit faster or slower than the commercially-available versions. Very tiny differences - maybe +/- 0.1% or 0.2% in pitch and BPM. I was just surprised that there was a difference at all! If I were compiling tracks for a similar collection, I would have raided the well-mastered CD first, and turned to other sources only when I had to. It's odd that I can't find any other tracks on any other CDs that match the A-List tracks exactly. Just wanted to compare notes with anyone else who'd had experience with the radio-only collections. Or someone who knew where the source material came from for the hard-to-find tracks. |

You're absolutely right about TM doing "homemade" edits. A former co-worker did several edits for them when he was working in Houston, back in the 80's. I wouldn't be surprised if they're using those same edits today...

They are. I've heard even their most recent GoldDisc releases with incorrect edits. Thankfully, by about 1990, everything was on promo CD, so they no longer had to edit down LP versions or transfer vinyl. It's really only the pre-1990 stuff you have to wonder about.

He once told me a bunch of the titles he had done TM edits for, but the only one I can recall was "Miracles" by Jefferson Starship. I only remember that because he said their only parameters for the edit were that it had to be a certain length and the line "when I went down on you" had to be removed. I realize it's anecdotal evidence, but from that I gathered Century 21/TM/TM Century was more bothered about the length of any edits they commissioned rather than those edits matching *any* versions released by the respective label.

I have the "A List" collection too. All 50 CDs, which I purchased back in 2001. I can safely say that it was one of the best purchases I've ever made. Sure there are some drawbacks ("Every Breath You Take" by the Police is not there, yet they include "Open All Night" by the Georgia Satellites), but I love how the music goes in (more or less) chronological order. It makes for a great trip down memory lane when you are listening to one CD after the other.
And yes, the 45 mixes and radio edits included here are priceless to have and many are not found anywhere else. Unfortunately the collection is no longer available from the place I got it (Radio Mall) but since you weren't able to purchase it unless you were in radio, most people couldn't get it anyway. I sure am glad I got mine when I could. |

I sometimes regret posting all the song titles and artists in the first post from this thread. That big listing makes this thread show up in the search results for just about every big hit from the '80s.
In any case, after scanning one hundred images and typing endlessly, I finally got the whole series entered into Discogs. The times posted on Discogs are the full track durations, including outro silence. I spot-checked a whole bunch of the tracks, and determined they they're all based on masterings from the TM Century library. Specifically, the A List tracks use an additional analog mastering step, at which the TM Century tracks were played with a D/A converter and re-digitized using an A/D converter that was not synchronized to the D/A converter. In practical terms, this means that all of the A List tracks all sound exactly like the TM Century tracks (same edits/mixes/EQ), but won't stay in perfect synchronization with them in a multi-track editor. I know that this collection is absurdly rare, so the odds of your finding one are pretty slim. I myself have only seen one out in the wild, and that sighting is what inspired me to buy the set that I have. If nothing else, you can see the actual discs and artwork for the full set. It'll help demystify the collection, which has turned up in lists in plenty of my posts over the years. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

My first thought was could this have been done intentionally to try and throw copyright police off the scent of exact duplication? Since I have never encountered these discs in the wild, I wonder if they are considered legitimate promos?(Meaning, did they have TM's permission to use the sources?) I have zero experience in copyright law, so I can only wonder at this point if there were more small companies that used these TM Century discs as sources. I'll admit, that back in the days of mobile DJing, it was a chore to assemble a respectable set of music that didn't break your back either physically or financially. There were more of these companies that I discovered long after getting out of the business. ERG Nu music and Platinum Series were just two I could think of off the top of my head. Always listing their music as "Radio Promos" yet also selling to mobile DJs through the mail. Heck, even I had a sub to TM Century's HitDisc series as a DJ. I suppose the upshot of my question deals with the idea that if you said you were producing "Promos" that were not for sale to the general public, did record companies more or less just turn a blind eye to these small companies? I wonder if there really was any real bucks made on these sets from the production side? |

<Dave> Someone please tell I-Heart Radio that St. Louis is not known as The Loo!

TM wasn't paying any copyrights, at least not back in the days when they started. Basically, it was understood that the promo record pools were helping to get music to small markets where the record labels weren't sending promos directly. "Gold" material was a bit more gray, but my guess is that the labels didn't want to say "no" to this when TM was doing such a stellar job in getting their new releases in the hands of thousands of programmers who otherwise would've never received original promo CDs from the labels.
So, no, they did not need permission from TM to use their discs as sources. It's well documented here on the board by Ron that even store-bought compilations use other previously available digital (CD) sources in many cases, and that's certainly the same story here. TM rarely, if ever, had access to master tape sources like a legitimately licensed CD would have. TM simply found the best source available, ran it through "No Noise" and put it on their disc, sometimes attempting to replicate a 45 edit in the process. |
