There is a version in the database of Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes" listed as "neither 45 nor LP" that runs (3:19). I heard this version for the first time today on Jack FM, and I was curious to know which mix it was.
It sounds similar to the familiar (3:28) version, but it has heavier reverb on the drums and a different sounding snare hit (and probably some other differences, too). I looked on allmusic.com, and there are a few other CDs (mostly import) that contain this mix. One in particular is the Adam Ant box set called Antbox, which lists this version as "Single." Is this a case where there was a different single mix in other countries, but the US used the LP version? |

Aaron, just FYI, both sides of my original promo 45 feature the familiar listed (3:27), actual (3:28) version. Don't forget, Jack FM is playing whatever THEY want, not necessarily the original U.S. hit 45 versions! :)

Don't get me wrong, Ed; I'm NOT a JACK supporter! But, since you asked, there's currently 37 stations in the U.S., and 7 in Canada that do the "Jack" format, according to www.jack.fm (which lets you listen online for free, if you are so inclined.) It's not only at 101.1FM in NYC, my friend - There's also one down Aaron's way, in Big D-Ft. Worth.

You got that right, Jim! They play plenty of LP versions, so I didn't think they were playing the US single version. I was just curious as to why the import box set lists this (3:19) mix as the "single version." My guess is that it must've been released as a single somewhere. |

Aaron, I remember hearing, repeatedly, from our Epic local label reps that "Adam & The Ants" were QUITE the hit phenomenon in Europe, during 80-81-82. I also remember us receiving into the station several Epic singles by them, which all stiffed out in the U.S. (Their anthem, "Antmusic", being among them.) Worldwide, Epic had to believe they had both a winning (Europe) and a losing (U.S.) formula going here. In '82, the group broke up, and Adam went solo. IIRC, "Goody Two Shoes" was his first solo single. Epic U.S. kept him on their artist roster, got great MTV airplay for it, and sort of "re-launched" him solo, stateside. Besides, in the 80's, Epic seemed to be in the forefront as to signing hit European acts to U.S. deals (After The Fire, Culture Club, Nena, etc.) At this time, Epic also had a very profitable working agreement with Virgin UK. Virgin had already tried their own failed U.S. label, in 73-74-75 ("Tubular Bells" was their only hit.) But, after repeated 80's U.S. successes, through leasing their masters to Epic, and other U.S. labels (like Human League and OMD on A&M,) Virgin U.S. re-launched in 1987, with Cutting Crew, T'Pau, Johnny Hates Jazz, Pretty Poison, The Other Ones, etc.) Virgin remained a U.S. Top 40 force for years. But, back to Epic. The guys told us they preferred to "customize" their European acts 45 releases for American tastes, and were usually not eager to just put out a "straight re-issue" of the European 45 version. Which to me would explain why an Import box would feature a "single" version of "Goody Two Shoes", that we would have no knowledge of here in the U.S., my friend. While trying to get us to play their music, the record reps would usually share with us (ad nauseum, sometimes) ALL of their 5 million reasons why they were POSITIVE this ________ record would be a sure-fire, #1 hit for US, if we'd just start playing it! Hence, I've listened to a few stories over the years.

I think it's the British 45 mix. Epic actually gave me one when it came out and I noticed the mix was different. It was on CBS records from the UK.

Was there ever an official extended version of Goody Two Shoes? It seems like it was begging for a longer version, but Discogs lists no such version, and the only version I found on YouTube sounds like it could have been edited at home from the album version (although it IS pretty well done).
Is anybody aware of a longer mix of this song issued at or around the time of the single? |

Nothing from the 80's but Hot Tracks did a custom edit in the 90's that ran 5:50 for their The Edge series.
