Pat, my commercial 45, which is stereo, has a listed time of (3:14), and an actual time of (3:15). I only post this info because all current CD lengths in the database for this song run between (3:21) and (3:26).

Just wanted to bump up this thread in case Pat wishes to incorporate Jim's run time info into the database.

Anyone know if the longer length on all listed CD's is due to a difference in speed...or, simply a later fade?

my commercial 45 issued as rca victor 0367 lists a run time
on the label as 3:14 and does indeed run that length......you can effectively re-create the vinyl 45 version by fading the 3:25 'track record' cd version for 0:14 from 3:00 to 3:14...... |

It was just pointed out to me that there is a different mix on the 45 and not just an early fade. For one, the drums are quite loud in the right channel on the LP, but they are centered and pushed back on the 45.
Also, at 0:07 in the right channel of the 45, there is a prominent electric piano. On the LP, that piano/keyboard is either missing or just pushed really far back in the mix. During the guitar solo, the electric guitar starts off in the right channel of the LP version, but it starts on the left in the 45. It then pans to the opposite channel about half way through. |

Glad to see it's been pointed out that the 45 mix is different and not just different time wise. There is also a bit of added reverb in the intro also that's not on the LP version. I have picked up any CD compilation of the Guess Who I can find and I've yet to find this 45 version on a CD.

I haven't been able to find the 45 mix on CD either, but I did find a nice Japanese pressing of the 45, which was pressed on better vinyl than what RCA used in the US. It still needs a lot of work to properly clean up, though.

Funny you mention the Japanese 45 Aaron, I've been looking for a decent one thinking that's my best bet for a clean rip. I ripped my US 45 but it needs more work.
The hunt continues. At least I know the Japanese 45 has the same mix as the US 45. Thanks for posting that! Do we know if the Canadian 45 is the same? |

Not sure about the Canadian 45, but I would suspect it's also the 45 version.

The 45 mix really is superior to the album version. Too bad it's never been released on CD in the U.S. ... I wonder if it's on a Canadian compilation somewhere.
