My commercial 45, which is stereo, has a listed time of (3:59), but an actual time of (3:57). I only post this info because the lone database CD appearance for this song runs (2:46), and tracks into the next selection. However, both the mono & stereo sides of my promo 45 do show a listed time of (2:50). The mono side has an actual time of (2:53); the stereo side is (2:49). Surprisingly, even my Columbia/Collectables reprint 45 states and actually includes the (2:50), stereo DJ 45 short version on it, not the longer original 45 version. FYI, an entire verse has been edited out of the (3:57) commercial 45 to achieve the shorter promo versions. This was a "45 only" release, and therefore did not appear on a 1974 Garfunkel LP. Together, all of the above factors seem to indicate that the 1974 original commercial 45 is the ONLY place to obtain this longer, (3:57) 1974 commercial 45 version.

Jim,
Thank you for posting this almost 15 years ago. Times like these I wish you were still here adding info for my jukebox project. I looked and looked but the 2:46 album time is on CD, but nothing else. Even the Playlist Art Garfunkel does not have the song. You are correct Jim the 3:57 is only available on the 45. I have exhausted myself and discogs even has no CD release for it. Qobuz, 7 Digital as well. If anyone has any idea where on CD it is, speak up! Someone either did an utterly fantastic transfer or ripped a CD! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vvr__xMhYnc Edited by PopArchivist |

Rich,
I believe the hard drive I gave you has about as good a copy of the 45 version that we'll get for this song....I believe Aaron did the vinyl clean-up of it years ago, but, he can attest to it's composition.... Ed |

Part of the reason this track hasn't seen
further reissue is Garfunkel does not care for the song and generally has not allowed for its inclusion on any reissues, as he has artistic control over his material. |

Live in stereo.

Ed, I don't think Aaron did that one. |

Nope, I do have a couple dubs of the 45 on my hard drive, but I don't have a cleaned up file. I don't think I ever worked on it. Also, assuming the CD version is just edited from the longer stereo version, I would've used as much of the CD version as possible and just spliced in the missing segment from vinyl. The file you have has obvious noise reduction, crackle, and I'm 200% positive it isn't anything I worked on.

This is one of the great reasons for joining the Chat Board and Pat's database. I said to myself, "The single is 1:07
longer than the only appearance on CD? And on the CD, it tracks into the next track?" That makes it almost useless from my standpoint. Did I ever digitize my single? Another shocker, no. I probably thought that as long as I have it on the 'Garfunkel' CD, I'm O.K.. I went into my archives and thought "I hope I have this thing". I had 3 unplayed copies left from my record store. I ran all 3 through my Nitty Gritty and took the best one. This kind of thing happens all the time to me. In listening to the 45 single, it sounds like the frequency response trails off at about 6000 cps. It's got no high end! I love these projects. -Bill. |

Tim Moore, who wrote "Second Avenue", also released his own version of it in 1974, although it didn't do as well as Garfunkel's cover of it, reaching only #58 on the Hot 100 and #41 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
