I have an unusual question on this one. I just downloaded it via iTunes (some of those Dickie Goodman records are priceless--this one is credited to John & Ernest, but it's still Dickie Goodman's handiwork). I'm having trouble placing the snippet toward the end of the track--lyrics are something like, "Your best friend went and told me." Obviously it was a good-sized soul hit (and might have been a pop hit as well).

In context, here's how the last few seconds of the record goes:

SNIPPET: "We know, they know, I know. . ." (from "Me And Mrs. Jones")
NARRATOR: I don't know. How do you know?
SNIPPET: "Your best friend went and told me. . ." (from ???)
NARRATOR: And just who is my best friend?
SNIPPET: "Superfly-fly-fly-fly..." (from "Superfly")

Anyone got any ideas?
Doug

Doug, your missing "snippet ID" is from Jermaine Jackson's 1973 Top 10 hit, "Daddy's Home."

It's Jermaine Jackson's version of "Daddy's Home" (originally done by Shep & The Limelites)

Thank you, Jim and Bob. (And welcome, Bob.) Now that you mention it, it did sound familiar.

I'm surprised that this track is available from iTunes, considering it's been out of print for 30+ years.

Something to listen for in your iTunes version: Check to see if your version has the original hit versions of the musical snippets, or has sound-alike rerecordings.

The "Mr. Jaws" album from 1974, rushed to market to cash in on the surprise success of the "Mr. Jaws" 45, had numerous rerecordings of many snippets on most or all of the songs. Some pretty good, some truly awful. Presumably, there were entanglements getting the rights to the songs, and it was simpler/cheaper to just rerecord the short snippets used in the singles.

The 45s use the hit versions, and all other sources of the break-in records that I've encountered are a mixed bag.

I had downloaded several Dickie Goodman tracks in addition to "SMS" ("Kong", "Watergate", "Mr. President" and "Energy Crisis '74"). I'm 99.9% sure that all of the snippets in those are indeed the originals.
