On a previous thread, there was a discussion about a "slow down" in pitch on the 45 version of Le Freak by Chic. Was this issue ever resolved? And if so, what was the decision?
I'm asking as I'm in the process of making my own personal series of 70s CDs for my own pleasure and would like to make sure I have the correct version on my set. Thanks for any input. |

JMD1961:
I don't think we ever did reach a final decision regarding the 45 version of Chic's "Le Freak". Based on the input received from several readers, it looks like the version that suddenly slows down in pitch and the version with the corrected pitch have both appeared on commercial vinyl 45 pressings, so I don't think one is necessarily considered more "correct" than the other. Given a choice between the two though, I definitely prefer the corrected pitch version because I find the pitch change on the slowed down version too jolting for my ears. Edited by Todd Ireland |

Thanks, Todd.
I agree, of course. I used the version found on "Sounds of the Seventies 1978". It didn't seem to have the pitch issue like "AM Gold - #1 Hits of the '70s: '75-'79" did. |

There are CDs with a (4:17) version notated as "edit of the LP version" (none of which TTBOMK have the pitch problems that plague most CD copies of the 45 verison). Isn't is fair to say that this (4:17) version is really the "45 version but 45 seconds longer" as the edits mirror the 45 version but the fade is just way extended?
Just a thought. Edited by sriv94 |

i don't know what all the hub-hub about pitch shifting in "le freak" is all about, because i pulled out the promo 45 and checked out all possible offending passages and discovered nothing... now, possibly in transfer to cd with tape masters there were some issues, but if you really wanta hear a great pitch shift, check out tommy james and the shondells "crimson and clover" on the original LP... now that is a power shift!

JMD1961, the versions of the song that slow down during the break sound just awful to my ears. I first noticed it when I bought my copy of "Sounds of the Seventies 1978" in 1990.

jrjr, you evidently have a promo 45 pressing where the pitch remains consistent throughout the record. As documented previously, there are some commercial 45 pressings where the pitch slows down dramatically at about the 2:45 mark. Trust me, if you've heard this, you'd understand what the hubbub is about because the sudden pitch change sounds autrocious. I remember when I first heard this suddenly-slowed-down version on the Mega-Hits Dance Classics Volume 10 CD (Priority 7059) years ago, I thought something was seriously wrong with my CD player!

Yes, I agree. It's not the one I ended up using on a permanent basis. Instead, I found a "45 version" listed as a bonus track of the greatest hits on iTunes. No shift at all. |

The only CD i've ever heard this tape slowdown is on a Mega Dance Classics CD on Priority records from 1989. Other than that, I have never heard of any 45 with the problem.
In any case, it's defective and shouldn't be there. |
