I just did a quick check of "Never Let Me Down" by David Bowie, and although the database states "LP version" for the copy on Singles 1969-93, I don't hear any difference between this version and the vinyl 45. What am I missing? Can anyone help out on this one?

Yes, I was fooled too at first by the cd title but the 45 version which is a remix does not appear on that "Singles 1969-93" cd. The "remix" on the 45 is quite obvious from the opening notes. Doesn't your 45 state "remix"?

Pat, perhaps Jim can provide more info about the 45 I am referencing, as I only heard a dub of his copy to compare it with the version on Singles.... The only info I have is that the label states "Single Version" but I don't know about any "remix" credits. The opening notes of his 45 are identical to the CD version, so I'm guessing we have two different 45 versions. I just sent you some audio to do a comparison.

Here is the 45 info from Jim:
- both stock & promo copies state "Single Version" (no remix credits) with catalog number of B-43031 - promo copy has same song on both sides rather than the b-side "'87 And Cry" - deadwax for both sides of promo copy is B-43031-S-45-X50312OA-Z2, then in lighter writing 1-2 SP-AR R-18313-Z2 and also (delta)17233 - deadwax for stock copy is B-43031-S-45-X50312OA-Z1 1-1 All copies have the same version found on the Singles compilation. |

Well guess what, there were two different commercial 45's released with this title. My commercial copy of "Never Let Me down" is EMI America 43031, states (7" remix edit) on the label, states and runs (3:55) and has deadwax number B-43031S-45*503464-B-21-RE1.

A promo cd single DPRO-31352 was also issued for this. Track 1 is simply called (edit) and runs 3:57. This is an edit of the extended dance remix and I would guess is the same as the (7" remix edit).
For what it's worth, the lp version is the only version I ever heard on the radio. Here are the tracks (all my timings--none are listed on the cd or insert) edit (3:57) extended dance remix (7:02) lp version (4:03) dub (3:57) (tracks directly into next selection) a cappella (2:03) instrumental (4:01) |

So we consider the LP version the hit version?
Anybody know which version Casey Kasem played on American Top 40? :-) FWIW, the LP version seems to have been released to radio first under "X503120A" and later released (again as "P-B-43031") under "X503464B." Edited by NightAire |
