Thanks to the incredible selection in the clearance bins at the various Half-Price Books in the Twin Cities, I picked up the Batman soundtrack for $1. Life is good.
The hit "Batdance" has been notoriously hard to find over the years, since it was left off the Hits I & II collections. (It's not Prince's finest work, but it was still a hit...) So, here are instructions for creating the 45 edit: Keep 0:00.0-1:44.7 of the LP version. Edit on the first of four guitar/bass drum notes. Remove 1:44.7-2:40.2; it's the entire guitar solo. Keep 2:40.2-4:55.4 of the LP version. Edit on the downbeat where the tempo picks up. Remove 4:55.4-6:06.8; it's the entire uptempo portion. Keep 6:06.8-6:13.7 (end) of LP version. In your mixdown, you'll have edits at 1:44.7 and 4:00.0, with a total run time of 4:06.9. Only two edits - this one isn't difficult at all. Timing is from the Batman soundtrack (Warner Bros. 9 25936-2), which can probably be found for $1 at a retailer near you! Edited by crapfromthepast |

After 26 years, I finally heard the unedited, unreleased original version of "Batdance." After hearing it, the dubbed in "funk" on the released version (in the line "get the funk up") becomes obvious, and there's even a bad splice on the 3rd and final one that made the LP and single versions. In addition to the "f" word on the original, this version runs close to 9:00. Most of what was trimmed to make it 6:13 is non-essential, although there is a completely different section (new tempo, new melody) that comes out of nowhere after the line "and where is the Batman." I can see why Prince chose to edit the final version down to 6:13, but it was interesting to hear nonetheless.

I dug around and found the unedited demo as well and I think I am just as
excited to discover this version all these years later. Thank you for posting about this. The file I found runs 8:46. Everything is the same (minus the extra parts Aaron described) except for the ending. There is no explosion sound effect (as well as the other sound effect right before the explosion) after the "who's going to stop 200 balloons nobody" lyric and they omit the "batman stop" Michael Keaton sound bite at the end. Instead it just fades out. Edited by chendagam |
