Barely a year old when song came out in 1966, I don't know the full story of this. There is both a "censored" version and an "uncensored" version of the song out there, but I do not know the difference between the two (it's the only Lou Christie hit I don't have in some way, shape or form).
So, two questions: A. What is the difference? B. Were both released as 45s, or is one a 45 version and the other an LP version (or some derivation threin)? |

The original "uncensored" version has these lyrics: "We were makin' out in the rain/And in this car our love went much too far". Deadwax reads "66-XY-308".
The "censored" version has these lyrics: "We fell in love in the rain/And in this car, love came like a falling star". Deadwax reads "66-XY-308 D.J." Both were issued as commercial 45's. A lot of DJ's thought that the original was a bit too much for 1966. Edited by Paul Haney |

Every reissue single of this I've ever come across (b/w "Lightning Strikes") has the the "falling star" version. Don't think I'd ever heard the "much too far" version until I came across an original-label stock copy a few years ago.

My good friend Jimct reports that his uncensored commercial 45 copy with the "we were makin' out in the rain" lyric has an actual and printed run time of 2:46. I'm passing this info along because the song's database CD entries have run times ranging from 2:43-2:51.
Perhaps Paul or anyone else who has a commercial 45 copy containing the censored "we fell in love in the rain" lyric could pass along the timing info to help us determine if it differs from the uncensored commercial 45 run time? |

my commercial 45 has the etching "K13473 66XY 308 RW" in
the run out groove and it's the "we fell in love in the rain/and in this car, love came like a falling star" version.. Edited by edtop40 |

Are you sure that isn't "K13473 66XY 308 Rev" ? As mine most definitely says "Rev" and makes no mention of D.J. in the dead wax (though mine is a stock copy). |

Both versions were released on 45 singles. The censored version is actually the scarcer one to find. Most of the run as a hit were uncensored.

I have just acquired a promo 45 for this song. Surely, there were both
censored and uncensored promo 45s made for this in early 1966. My copy, confirmed as MGM 13473, happens to include the uncensored version, has a listed time of (2:46), an actual time of (2:47) and deadwax info of "K13473", followed by "66 XY 308-1". Ed, BTW, you never did actually answer Todd's specific question from earlier. Although you did provide us with the deadwax info from your "censored version" 45, you never did provide us with the listed & actual timings from it. I'm sure Todd (and others) are curious to know if the lyric changes ended up having any effect on the listed/actual timings for that version of the song. Thanks! |

My promo is the same as yours. I don't ever recall hearing this version on the radio back in 1966, so obviously the "clean" version was serviced to radio. |
