Can anyone confirm if the single version of Sarah McLachlan's "Adia" is a remix? I have it on cassette single and the run time is 3:58. The cardboard sleeve says the track was remixed by Tom Lord-Alge, so am I correct in assuming that the mix on the commercial single differs from the one on McLachlan's Surfacing CD?

Yes, the single did have a slight "remix." It's not drastically different, but you can tell when switching between the single and LP. Offhand, I can't name any major differences.

Do you think the differences are enough to warrant a 45 version/LP version distinction?

Well, my Surfacing CD is packed away, so I can't do a direct comparison. I'll try to borrow a copy to compare the two.

More than 3 years later, I just noticed this post. Here's my promo CD single info:
Sarah McLachlan-"Adia" (ASCD-3463) 1-(Non-described version) (listed 4:04; actual 4:03) FYI, on this promo CD single there is no mention of either a "remix", or of Tom Lord-Alge's name, anywhere, either on the disc itself or the artwork. It looks like my promo CD single version is not the same one that appears on the cassette single. On my promo's disc itself, though, it does clearly state: "Produced, recorded and mixed by Pierre Marchand", for whatever that's worth. My promo CD single also appears to run slightly longer than the cassette version. |

The promo version has different improvisation on the end of the song. The drums are harder (more compressed). Some other points to mention here:
Starting at 1:23 to 1:31, there is a high pitched keyboard voice at the tail end of the first chorus, not present on the LP. Starting with the second verse at 2:06, the vocals are harmonized, and remains this way until the end. This is not the case on the LP. At 2:47, the drums and bass kick in whereas on the LP, it simply continues with Sarah and the piano. At 3:18 and again at 3:33, "innocent" is sung in sustained harmony, while on the LP, she sings "believe me Adia". I noticed three AAA stations in my area, back in 1998, played this mix with a fade about 15 seconds before the end. I don't know what CD promo this was. But I have only heard a CD single of this mix with the sustained end. I would definitely differentiate between the LP and promo versions. |

In response to Jody's latest post, I just checked my friend Tom's database. He has only one promo CD single, but it is a different one than mine, which I documented earlier. His has 2 tracks, and is # ASCD-3475. Tom only has about 15 letters available in his "details" field, and it says "LP v/Remix". Maybe the remix is the shorter version Jody heard in his area back in 1998. I will ask Tom for additional "Track 2" details, and report back when I have more info.

1-Album Version (actual 4:02) 2-Remix (actual 3:47) Now that we know that a shorter version was available to radio in 1998, I'm thinking that Cut 2 on this disc must've been the same one that Jody heard on the radio in his neck of the woods, back in the day. |

I have received Jim's email. It is the early fade of the version that is remixed as I've described above. However, I also have a copy (which I sent back to Jim) which is this same mix, but with a sustained end. So there are three distinct versions then:
(a) LP (b) Remix (c) Remix (with early fade) |
