I believe there is a different version on this one too. The version on "The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection" in mono, the overall mix is more punchy than the stereo (yes, even for a ballad!) and it fades later too. So, is the mono the 45?

My copy of the single is in stereo. Can't comment on how it sounds w/r/t the CD.

AFAIK, the only Helen Reddy single that was released in mono was "Emotion" I don't know why...the promo was mono/stereo, and 1975 was kinda late for a mono-only release.

so the version on "The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection" needs some sort of designation, but we don't know what...

I've finally gotten around to comparing the mono mix of "Somewhere in the Night" as it appears on Helen Reddy's The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection to the song's stereo mix on Greatest Hits (and More) and I agree with David's observation that the two mixes are indeed different. So if the song was released in stereo on the 45 and LP, then where did this mono mix first surface? Perhaps Jim, our resident DJ 45 guru, could clue us in as to whether he ever received a promo 45 of "Somewhere in the Night" with a mono and stereo side. But, like Hykker points out, 1976 sure seems awfully late in the game to be issuing a mono mix!

Todd, a promo 45 for "Somewhere In The Night" is already on my promo 45 want list. I have jump now bumped it up, to a "top priority 45 want." When I snag one (and it shouldn't be too difficult), I will report back with my findings.

Jim:

An Internet search has led me to uncover that a mono/stereo promo 45 was indeed released for "Somewhere in the Night". I'll e-mail you to let you know where you can purchase one.

David, your observations match what I found on the mono side of the DJ 45. Kudos for the sharp ears!

I let the .wav roll while I played both the mono and stereo sides of the DJ 45, then folded the entire .wav to mono and compared the two songs side-by-side. For starters, the very first piano note on the stereo mix sounds like it has a glitch in it; not so at all on the mono mix.

The mono mix definitely has the piano more upfront, and there is added percussion, with what sounds like a kick drum. This explains the extra punchiness.

But the most striking difference is at the 3:02 mark, as the final singing of the hook begins. At this point, the stereo mix takes the punchiness crown away from the mono mix hands down, with a real kick to the drumbeats. At the same point, the mono mix drenches the drumbeats in reverb, and buries them in the mix. The peaks on the stereo mix's drumbeats beginning at the 3:02 mark are substantially higher than any other part of the .wav file. The same peaks on the mono mix aren't even as high as the first hook earlier in the mono mix of the song.

Stereo mix: fades at 3:15, out at 3:27
Mono mix: fades at 3:20, out at 3:32

The stereo mix is the same on both the stock and DJ 45.

(EDITED to add .wav image; DJ 45 stereo mix on left, mono mix on right, both folded to mono.

)

Excellent analysis, Yah Shure! Based on your description, I'd say we can conclude then that the database should be updated to reflect that the Helen Reddy The Woman I Am: The Definitive Collection CD contains the mono DJ 45 mix of "Somewhere in the Night". Way cool!
