Does anyone have a commercial 45 copy of Kool & The Gang's "Ladies Night" who can pass along the run time info? I ask because the song's CD appearances with the "45 version" comment run anywhere from 3:22 to 3:31.

The actual vinyl LP running time is (6:32) with the listed time (6:38) (LP title "Ladies Night" Delite DSR-9513).
The below 2 CD entries are the correct length of the LP version. (S) (6:34) Mercury 314546108 The 12h Collection And More (LP version but :13 longer) (S) (6:33) Hip-O 314560349 J.T. Taylor Greatest Hits (LP version but :12 longer) Meanwhile, another CD entries as LP version have 6:21 or 6:22 as the actual time. For example... "(S) (6:21) Rebound 314520334 Ladies Night (LP version)" etc... Those LP version on the CDs should have "shorter" comments. --abagon |

I was attempting to re-create the single version from the LP version (because I'm not very impressed with the sound quality of any of the single versions on CD) and discovered there is some unique audio that prevents you from making the true 45 mix from the album mix.
At about 57 seconds in, the lead singer sings, "Girls! Y'all got one." On the single the girls shout, "what?" The singer continues, "A night that's special everywhere..." Interestingly, syncing up the LP version with the single version, it falls briefly out of sync on the word "got" and the beat that hits at the same time... not sure if they punched in or it was a splice with the overdub or what, but it is out of sync by a handful of milliseconds. Additionally, there are two taps on the snare that get dropped on the single, after the "what?" and before "a night..." that is on the LP version. The edit, if the audio was identical, to make the single edit would have been on the beat about 1:27, after "oh what a night," connecting to "romantic lady..." The single version I'm using for reference is running about .5% faster than the LP version I'm using BUT NEITHER ARE FROM VINYL so whether this is the case with the original records, I could not say. The LP version would fade out by 3:30 to complete the edit, missing only the "What?" and the missing two drum hits. |

To NightAire:
I believe the 45 was an out-of-sequence edit of the LP version which may indirectly explain the "handful of milliseconds" discrepancy. They're hard to duplicate exactly! Andy |

Very good call. The sequence from (2:23)-(~2:31) of the LP version is what's on the 45. |

The CD Ladies Night: Kool and the Gangs Greatest Hits
has the single version of Ladies Night as well as the short edit of Hollywood Swinging at 4:14 which if I remember right was a promo only back in 1974. My mistake. What i was referring too is the rerecording for the CD. My bad. Edited by garye |
