According to abagon, the actual commercial 45 run time of Matthew Wilder's "Break My Stride" is 3:01, not 3:05 as stated on the record label.

In an old post from Ron about Eric's Hard To Find 45s On
CD Vol. 14 '70s And '80s Pop Classics (2012) he noted: "BREAK MY STRIDE - Matthew Wilder (1983) - seems to use same analog transfer as Sony's Don't Touch My 45s (1993) but slowed down by 0.4%; no NR". Does this mean this more accurately matches the speed of the 45? Many sources run 2:59 so I'm wondering if this is a very minor speed difference. Any recommendations on the best sounding source for this tune? |

The 0.4% speed difference is pretty insignificant. The Sony and Time-Life discs with the song all run about 110.1 or 110.2 BPM. The Eric disc runs about 109.8 BPM. Not sure what the true 45 runs at, but it's certainly close to these values.
It's been a few years since I did my comparisons for "Break My Stride", but I seem to recall that all the versions on CD sounded a little muffled. Back then, I chose to use a homemade version that might have been taken from vinyl or re-EQ'd one of the versions from CD. (I don't remember.) The versions on Sony's Don't Touch My 45's (1994) and Forever Pop Vol. 3 (1995) are digitally identical. These two discs are quite worthwhile, with a great track selection and very good sound overall (nice levels, good EQ, good source tapes, no NR). If you need a digital source for "Break My Stride", start with one of these. |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

Following up on the discussion, I picked up Sony's
Don't Touch My 45's on Ron's suggestion and this is now my go to source for this track. No muffled sound here. I compared against the Time-Life discs and confirmed that the Time-Life discs dump the fade a few seconds early. |
