I know this song has come up in a couple of other threads but tonight when I was recording a compilation disc, I discovered that the version on the "Eliminator" CD (at least my copy - and it matches the Warner Bros. 23774 designation in the database) is not 4:32 but only 3:35.

Thus my question: is this the 45 version, a truncated LP version to match the length of the 45 version or something else altogether?

Important point here is that there are at least some pressings of "Eliminator" where the length of the song is only 3:35.

I have an original West Germany-for-U.S. pressing of the "Eliminator" CD from 1983-84, w/ the so-called "target" design on the disc itself. (Even the front booklet and back insert both read "Printed in West Germany", and it's still in its original heavy-duty smooth jewel case. As some folks here already know, prior to 1985, most CDs made for the U.S. market were manufactured in either Japan or West Germany, and they continued to produce them for us as late as 1987-88, until enough CD plants had opened here. BTW, there was a Japan-for-U.S. pressing of "Eliminator" as well.) "Legs" runs 4:31 (listed 4:35) on my copy. The center hub reads "7599 23774-2", followed by "2893 267 04". So you definitely have a later pressing, that likely includes "RE" or "RE-1" on the hub...

And in the event Warner Bros. also changed either of the album's other two singles, "Gimme All Your Lovin" runs 3:58 on my CD (Joel Whitburn claims the 45 version clocks in at just "3:24" in his "Hot 100 Annual"), and "Sharp Dressed Man" runs 4:12 (Whitburn says the 45 version is only "3:01")...

My copy is a made in U.S.A. BMG manufacture of the Warner Bros. disc. The hub reads "1 23774-2 RE-2 06."

As to the two other singles 80musicfreak mentions, "Gimme All Of Your Love" runs 4:03 with a listed time of 3:59 and "Sharp Dressed Man" runs 4:07 with a listed time of 4:13.

Or even "RE-2", lol. That means there's a THIRD version of the "Eliminator" CD out there, w/ the "23774" no. and "RE-1" on the hub. Maybe they put the 12" version of "Legs" on that one... :-)

FYI, I found the Made In Japan "target label" version at my local library!

The center of the hub reads "9 23774 2 2E 17." Not sure about the "17," though... My wife thinks it says "11."

(How do you guys not go blind looking at the center of the CD hubs??)

At least according to the label, "Legs" on this one runs 4:35. Haven't popped it in the CD player yet.

Looking forward to see how this "original" sounds.

I am happy this song topic popped up again.

This was one of the few times where I can remember us getting in two
different, unique promo 12" singles for the same song. Pat already refers
to one of these in his db. He currently calls it the "12" DJ single version".
This is actually referring to the second promo 12" inch single we got in for
"Legs", however. Its promo stock # is PRO-A-2146, and it has the exact
same, listed (7:48) "Special Dance Mix" on each side of it. We never played
this version on-air. If I were Pat, I would modify how he opts to describe
the name of the two current db CDs that include this version, to
something like "12" DJ extended dance version". Here's why: we'd already
received in to the station an earlier, promo 12" single for "Legs". PRO-A-
2124. This one had the exact same, listed (4:31) "Remix" version, on both
sides. As I recall, we played this version between 7PM-5AM. Pat currently
has two db entries, that run (4:30) and (4:31), that he currently describes
as "45 version but :56 (or :57) seconds longer". But what these two db
CDs actually contain is the first, (4:31) promo 12" version. I think Pat
should call this version something like the "12" DJ single remix version".

I currently do own copies for both of these promo 12-inchers. And I know
exactly where they are now filed. But my "hit promo 12" singles, M to Z"
are stacked 5 high, with good ol' ZZ Top at the very bottom. But timing
them right now is not possible for me. I've been doing new-promo-45-
buys research for hours now, and heavy lifting is just not an option right
now. I'll make it a goal to "excavate them" by Sunday. At least I
remembered what I had for them, and sure enough, Discogs had scans
and particulars for both. And luckily, the actual CD timings for both
versions are to within a second or two of the listed times on each of the
promos. So were basically "golden" here now, before I even get the actual
12" timings.

Happy to be able to finally solve this remaining "db version mystery!"

Rhino put out a digital 45 that actually runs (2:58). If the stock single is a slightly earlier fade of the LP version, I wonder if this is a promo.

Doug, the Rhino digital 45 is the commercial 45 version, as far as I
know. It is remixed and not an edit or early fade of the LP version.

The single version is promoted as being on the new compilation "The Very
Baddest of ZZ Top" due in July.
