I went out and Bought Janet's Number Ones CD and I'm slightly disappointed in the laziness put into this CD set. I'll give a track by track
breakdown and my nerdy analyzation.

CD 1

1. What Have You Done For Me Lately 4:44

Same as Design Of A Decade.

2. Nasty 4:03

Same as Design Of A Decade/Control.

3. When I Think Of You 3:56

Same as Design Of A Decade/Control.

4. Control 5:53

They tacked the intro from the Control CD onto the DOAD master. You
can see the frequency cutoff switch from the intro to the main part of the
track.

5. Let's Wait A While (Remix) 4:37

No problems with this one.

6. The Pleasure Principle (LP Edit) 4:13

Same as Design Of A Decade.

7. Diamonds 4:53

No problems with this one.

8. Miss You Much 4:12

Same as Design Of A Decade. It would have been nice to get the video
version with the breakdown at the end since it was never on CD.

9. Rhythm Nation (LP Version with Pledge) 5:29

It was someone's great idea to rip the LP Version from one of the maxi
CDs and tack on the intro from the Rhythm Nation album with a poor edit
point after the count. Why not just use the whole album version? This is a
new edit.

10. Escapade 4:44

Same as Design Of A Decade.

11. Alright (Video Version w/Rap) 4:58

This one is all good.

12. Come Back To Me (I'm Beggin' You Mix) 5:38

Same as Design Of A Decade.

13. Black Cat (Video Mix/Short Solo) 4:31

No problems with this one.

14. Love Will Never Do (Without You) (Single Version) 4:34

Same as Design Of A Decade.

15. The Best Things In Life Are Free 4:36

No problems.

16. That's The Way Love Goes 4:26

Same as Design Of A Decade.

CD 2

1. If 4:32

Lifted straight from the Janet album, so they faded the beginning a bit to
make it smooth.

2. Again 3:47

No problems.

3. Because Of Love 4:17

Lifted straight from the Janet album.

4. Any Time, Any Place (R. Kelly Remix) 5:11

No problems.

5. Scream (Single Edit) [New Version] 4:02

Nearly the correct single edit. Missing the warped synth before the replaced "stop fuckin' with me" line.

6. Runaway 3:34

Same as Design Of A Decade.

7. Got 'Til It's Gone (Radio Edit) 3:35

The real edit, but missing a few seconds at the beginning with Q-Tip's
line "now, why you wanna go an do that?"

8. Together Again (Radio Edit) 4:07

No problems.

9. I Get Lonely (LP Edit) 4:01

No problems.

10. Go Deep 4:42

No problems.

11. What's It Gonna Be?! 4:02

Nothing wrong as far as I can tell. I'm not really familiar with the track.

12. Doesn't Really Matter 4:56

No problems.

13. All For You (Video Mix) 4:31

No problems.

14. Someone To Call My Lover (Single Edit) 4:14

No problems.

15. All Nite (Don't Stop) 3:27

After a long run of no issues here comes a good one. It's lifted straight
from Damita Jo so there's a leftover fade out from the previous track and
the end cuts off early due to R&B Junkie starting after it. Why not just rip it
from one of the CD singles?

16. Call On Me 3:35

Lifted from 20 Y.O. instead of the single with the prelude before it.

17. Feedback 3:55

No problems.

18. Make Me 3:38

The biggest mistake (in my opinion)! It's sourced from MP3. Yes, a
commercial CD track sourced from MP3.

I cannot believe that Kevin Reeves name is attached to this release! Here are a few other issues that should break up that "long run" without issues nicely, lol.

Because Of Love is straight from the janet. album. The single version is this version faded earlier before the "Wind" interlude kicks in. Number Ones has much wind during the fade. I assume the same of "Again" but at least it was handled much better on NO.

Scream is a newly created Clean Single Edit, not the original found on promotional and import singles. The line "stop fucking with me" is replaced by "stop pressuring me" differently... most noticeably, Number Ones's is missing a wobbly synth/bass effect at the beginning of this line that is present on the original censored version as well.

Got 'Til It's Gone is the real radio edit, but it's missing a few seconds of the beginning. It starts late and misses several of Q-Tip's "now why you wanna go a do that"'s.

Call On Me is confusing, because the interlude heard on the beginning of Number Ones is actually not on the beginning of the track on 20YO, it's on the end of the previous song. Who the hell saw fit to add it to the intro?

The EQ'ing on this set is terrible as well. Compare 2001's "All For You" on Number Ones to the original CD single!

Thanks. I updated my post. I didn't pay enough attention to Because Of Love
and Got 'Til It's Gone the first
time...probably because I barely ever listen to them haha.

I am SOOO glad I bought that rare Dutch CD comp with the 7" Vocal of "Pleasure Principle." Looks like they may never reissue that thing on CD.

Is the remix of "Let's Wait Awhile" the same as the 45 version?

Does the Janet Jackson Number Ones CD suffer from the overcompression and loudness problem as on most modern CD releases?

I think for pop releases this question doesn't even have to be asked. It's just
a given.

as my other post mentions...it is possible that the version on this cd compilation IS the single version....
