I have a European commercial CD single for this song. I'm certain it's from Europe, even though no countries are listed. And I'm certain it's commercial because it's got a barcode.
Chrysalis SCD 1, copyright 1987, four tracks: 1. Ship Of Fools 2. Private Revolution 3. Trouble Down Here 4. World Groove (Do The Mind Guerrilla) [sic] The odd part for me is that it's got a 32-beat fade from the downbeat at 3:20 to the downbeat at 3:36. I checked - it's an early fade of the LP version. That puts it significantly shorter than the 4:27 version on Private Revolution and on the commercial 45. Anyone know if this early fade released on a UK 45 or on a US promo 45? Or if this was the hit in Europe? Edited by crapfromthepast |

Ron, I unfortunately discovered a few years ago that the version of "Ship Of
Fools" found on that SCD 1 CD single does not match up with any US stock/promo 45 versions of the song. |

I do have a US promo 45 with the regular 4:27 version on one side and a (listed) 3:32 version (plays 3:30) on the other.

Chuck, I must've been rushed during my 2011 response to Ron. I just
pulled out my two promo 45 copies, and my Post-It Note timings show a listed and actual (4:27) version on one side, and a listed (3:32), actual (3:33) version on the other. The good news is that Aaron already has a dub of my promo 45's contents (so we can see where the :03 second difference in our actual short v timings are.) I also know I assumed for a while that my import CD single contained the same version as my short version promo 45 did (since I thought Chrysalis had sent us that import CD to the station), until Aaron later compared the two files for me, and informed me otherwise. Was it ever determined if the 3:33 promo version was just
an early fade? |

I'd like to know this too. I've always loved this song but every copy I own is the full length version. |

I can now answer my own question: the short promo edit side IS just an early fade of the full length version starting at approximately 3:19 and fading over the next 17 or 18 seconds.
I'm now wondering if most stations played the full length version since that was the A side, or flipped to the B side to play the early fade... |

I have a radio recording of the song off WLOL Minneapolis
and was about to post that it was the promo fade, but listening to it again, it appears to be the LP version, but dumped around the 4 minute mark. Edited by 995wlol |
