Can anyone confirm that the 3:48ish version that's readily available on cd (example Sound & Vision) is the true 45 version? The DB doesn't include it and I don't even remember it from back in the day?

I remember really liking this song when it came out, but it kind of disappeared quickly. I did buy the 45, though (Chrysalis 2603). I also have the Sound & Vision cd, and, in a ROUGH comparison, they sound the same to me. They even fade out at the same time.
For what it's worth, this isn't one of Blondie's better songs, in my opinion. I guess my tastes have changed a little over the years after all. Jon O. |

As far as I know, all 3:47-ish versions are the single edit. The one I have (off an import CD) is. Incidentally, I had the opposite reaction to jono. I remember kinda liking the song when it came out. But now I think it's one of Blondie's BEST songs ever. One of my 5 favorites. If you like their island-y stuff, like "Tide Is High", this is right up that alley. A very catchy melody. And Blondie did 2 nice videos for it.

I'm pretty sure the 45 version has some remixing
involved, at least using the version on the "10 Best Series" CD for comparison (my vinyl 45 vanished long ago). At about 3:28 on the 45, there is a drum/high hat hit with no vocal in the mix. If you were editing the LP version to recreate the 45, there is a vocal at the equivalent point. That is the most obvious difference, but to me it sounds like the entire 45 version may be a subtle remix to sound punchier...hard to tell if it's a remix or just aggressive mastering on my CD (those cases drive me nuts). In any event, I was not able to edit the LP version to exactly match the 45 version. I agree that it's a good song. I liked it so much that I bought the 45 in 1982, when my teenage budget was very skimpy. I was surprised when it flopped. Maybe it was viewed as too reminiscent of "The Tide Is High"? In any event, it's a nice relaxing-at-the-beach-with-a-tropical- drink tune. |

I listened to my 45 at the 3:28-9 mark and Deborah Harry does sing what I believe is "Forget about what..." or something like that. It sounds the same as the version on the cd "Sound & Vision" to my ears.
Roscoe - is this the point on the 45 you were referring to? It seems the horns are mixed a little louder on the cd than the 45, but I really don't hear any other differences. I don't have the "10 Best Series" cd. Jon O. (thinking maybe this song isn't so bad after all...better than "Rapture" to me, but it's no "Sunday Girl" or "Dreaming" or "Heart Of Glass") |

The moment I was referring to was about 1 second before she sings the "Forget about..." line. On my CD it's at exactly the 3:28 mark, just before the horns kick in. The downbeat where the horns kick in would actually be an edit point if you were trying to recreate the 45 from the LP, but the half second just before that point has some vocals (sounds like "Aye-ya island") that aren't on the 45. Confusing to explain but it sounds like there's a mix difference immediately preceding an edit point. |

I posted a bit about the 10 Best Series disc on
the Steve Hoffman board: All ten tracks are digitally identical clones from the 1994 2-CD Platinum Collection. Very harsh mastering throughout on the Platinum Collection. Very good source tapes, but compressed/limited aggressively to about the -1 dB level on most tracks, and a very harsh EQ. I'm not a fan. The reason I bring this up at all is that the cheapie Ten Best disc has the promo 45 version of "Rapture", which is superb and is still kinda hard to find, and the 45 versions of "The Tide Is High" and "Atomic". They don't sound all that great, but they're here to be had for cheap. It also chops off the popcorn- sound intro to "Heart Of Glass", which is not cool. The Ten Best disc has: 1. Call Me 2. One Way or Another 3. Hanging on the Telephone 4. Dreaming 5. Heart of Glass 6. Rapture 7. The Tide Is High 8. Island of Lost Souls 9. Denis 10. Atomic FYI - I recommend a lot of the other, older Ten Best discs, including Little River Band, Billy Squier, Juice Newton and Culture Club. Edited by crapfromthepast |

Which 45 version of "Atomic", there were 2...one ran ~3:17, the other ~3:45. |

It's the 3:45 version; I didn't know there was a 3:17 45 version for "Atomic". |

Maybe I have a different pressing, but my 45 has sounds like "aye-ya, aye-ya, aye-ya, aye-ya Island" from about 3:23-3:27, then no vocals until about 3:29 where she sings "Forget about what...". The Sound & Vision cd, has this exact same sequence, from what I'm hearing. Maybe this cd is different than the version that's on the "10 Best Series"? Jon O. Edited by jono |
