This discussion about "Coming Up Close" reminded me to ask about my other favorite til tuesday song, "(Believed You Were) Lucky". Although it only hit #95, I thought it was an amazing single. Does anyone have an mp3 of the single version (which removes the f-bomb at the end of the song)? I know the single version will never make it to CD so I'd be grateful if anyone can share it. Thanks!

Frank

I just compared the two, and this is not actually a re-sing. They edited in part of an earlier chorus to remove the "f" bomb at the end. The edit splices in about 6 seconds, starting at the word "life" at 3:14 (from the line "life could be lovely"), and the end point of the edit is right before the word "great."

Great song indeed!

Glad you were able to decipher this. I have a sealed
copy of the promo CD single, and really didn't want to
unseal it.

The promo CD single has custom artwork on the back,
including lyrics. They conveniently extended a little
graphic to where the offending word would be, so that it
looks very natural without it. As a result, I was never
sure what was on the actual CD. I kinda doubted that Epic
would release the song to radio with such a prominent bad
word at the end of the song, but I was never really sure.
There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

I just received a copy of this promo CD today. In case you had any doubts, Ron, it definitely has the clean single version.

Never really understood why Aimee Mann felt the need to drop
an obscenity in an otherwise very beautiful song. The edit
on the promo (don't know if there ever was a commercial
single) sounds more natural than the album version with the
F-bomb.

She swore a whole bunch on the single releases from her second solo album I'm With Stupid, which probably ruined any chance of airplay she might have gotten with them.

She's still one of my favorite artists, ever.

If you mean they didn't clean up the singles, then yes, I'd say it hurt her
chances of getting spins. On the other hand, Alanis Morissette cursed
on her singles, too, but radio still aired the semi-clean versions.

Not to create too much thread drift, but it almost seemed
like Maverick records was sort of thumbing their nose at
radio with the sloppy promo edits on "You Oughta Know" and
"Hand In My Pocket". In both cases, we cleaned them up
further where I was working at the time.

It wasn't just Maverick. It seemed many labels were getting much "looser" with how much of a word could be left in and still pass for a radio edit. Nevertheless, the small market CHR station where I worked at the time never cleaned up a song further than what was serviced to us. I also don't ever recall getting any complaints. At night, we would play things like "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails and "Gin And Juice" by Snoop Dogg.
