Not a Top 40 hit, but does anyone know how to create the
4:45 (Edit) from the LP version?

Ooh I'd be interested in that myself. I like collecting 45 versions of AOR/classic rock hits.

Ok, I have this "single version" on a very rare UK 2-CD promo set from 1994 called "Direly Straits" which included most (if not all) of Dire Straits' hit singles on it.

Dissecting the edited "single version" cut on the disc, the "single version" can be extracted from the album version. Here's what I concluded to making the edit of "Skateaway."

Using the "Making Movies" album version, Keep 0:02.4 to 4:30.5 (the edit is before the echoey drum beat), remove 16 counts (from 4:30.5 to 4:38.2).

Next, keep 4:38.2 to 5:02.0. (This section should begin with an "echoey drum beat").

Remove everything else after 5:02 onward.

With what you have left, you should have a total file run-time of 4:48 or so.

Next, put a sinusoidal fade from 4:30.1 to 4:48.0. Then put a slight fade in from the beginning the file (0:00 to 0:09.4).

Hopefully all of this makes sense!

One thing I'm not to certain about is the speed. The 45 version sounds more sped up than the album version. Hopefully someone can help fill in this missing piece of the puzzle!

I attempted the edit, yet sometimes without a source
file it's tricky.

This YouTube clip should suffice as a source file.

P.S. Feel free you share your recreation with me :-)

Took another stab at it. I didn't write down edit
points, but thanks to Jim for sending a 45 dub. Also,
thanks to Bo for the YouTube link. You definitely need
a source file.

With the 45, I think besides being slightly faster (.5
faster), the intro fades in later than the album. Mark
Knopfler's opening vocal is at :25 in if that helps.

Run time is 4:44.

If Ron (Crapfromthepast) or Mark M. has any interest at
tackling this one, they can share edit points.
