the 45 issued as atlantic 89361 states on the 45's face that it's stereo but it's actually mono and runs 2:53 like all the mono versions in the database...

How does this version compare to the original Atco 45? I have both 45's, i've just never dug them out and a/b'd them.

Mark, my 1961 Atco 6144 commercial 45 has a listed time of (2:44), but,
like Ed's 1986 45 also does, has an actual time of (2:53). Numerous db CDs
include the song. Actual times for mono CD versions range from (2:51) to
(2:54). Actual times for stereo CD versions range from (2:51) to (2:59).

My 1986 promo copy of this also states stereo, but is actually mono, and has the exact same listed (2:55); actual (2:53) timings as the 1986 commercial 45 does. This time exactly parallels its CD appearance from the film soundtrack of the same name, from which this new exposure propelled the song to this second, 1986 chart run.

While researching the K-tel compilations that budaniel inquired about yesterday, I realized that there's a top 40 hit (top 10, actually!) from 1986 that's MISSING from the on-line database - and it's this one. Sure, Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" was originally a top 10 smash when released on Atco 6194 in 1961 (#4 Billboard, #3 Cash Box, and #6 Record World), and yes, it's included in the db as a 1961 hit. However, I can't imagine that its second chart run in 1986 could be questioned as making it a consensus top 40 hit again - after all, when it was featured in the film of the same name and re-released as a commercial single on Atlantic 89361 (as jimct originally noted above), that time it went on to hit #9 in Billboard and #10 in Cash Box (Record World of course being defunct by then)...

Another song w/ two separate top 40 chart runs that immediately comes to mind is "The Twist" by Chubby Checker, in both 1960 & 1962. And sure enough, when you currently do a search of top 40 hits in the db from 1962, "The Twist" appears, w/ the following note:

Pat, is there a reason the same shouldn't be done for "Stand By Me" under 1986???

It is an independent mix. And was available then in mono
on Atlantic Oldies Series 45 singles as it had been for
many years.
