My promo 45 happens to have the labels on the incorrect sides. My (4:41) version actually runs (4:39), and the other side says "(Edit)(3:59)" after the title, and actually runs (4:02).

I noticed that Pat added the comment "commercial copies were all (4:02)," so I asked Ed about his commercial 45. Ed reports that his runs (4:41) like the full length CD. Are there two different commercial 45s, or should the comment read "commercial copies were all (4:41)"?

Can the DJ edit be recreated from the LP version? Am looking for edit points, if possible...

I remember hearing two different edits of this song.
An edit played on our local CHR at the time WSRZ (Z-106) Sarasota, FL went from the guitar solo into "Oh, lots of promises in the dark..." thus eliminating the third verse. Then a completely different edit was heard on "American Top 40." It basically removed the second verse. It went right from the first "...sign it on the bottom line" into "Hollywood can be so lonely..." leaving the third verse in tact. I don't know which one appeared on the single. I remember the jukebox at the local Pizza Hut had this 45 with "Don't Mean Nothing (Radio Edit)" as the "B" side. I never felt it was worth investing a quarter to play it though. |

To RichM921,
Please don't forget that 'American Top-40' oftentimes used the option of custom edits of songs back in the 70s & 80s to be able to better fit timings of commercial stopsets. Andy |

The promo edit is the one you heard on the CHR station in Florida, Rich. To answer the question of editing, it cannot be recreated from the longer LP version, because at the place where the guitar solo transitions to the "lots of promises" section, there is unique audio.

I find (allegedly) two extended versions of this song on 12" vinyl:
The Extended Rock Mix and The 7:27 length mix, which also lists itself as being from the LP (the LP mix as mentioned above is only about 4:42). It doesn't appear either version appeared on the CD single at the time, and I can't find a re-release of the album that includes either one as a bonus track. I also can't find it on digital services such as Qobuz. Does anybody know if these versions every made it from tape to the digital realm without passing through vinyl first? |

7:27 is just an error on the labels. I own this 12" and it is just the LP version on both sides. |
