"Outstanding" by the Gap Band peaked at #51 on the Hot 100 in 1983, and it's been sampled in numerous other songs. My stock 45 has a printed time of 3:57, but the actual run time is 3:16. I have a dub of the promo 45 on my hard drive, and it also has an actual time of 3:16. The printed time of the LP version is 3:10, but I don't have the vinyl LP to check the actual run time. The version on Billboard Top R&B Hits 1983 exactly matches the stock 45.

To Aaron:
Don't forget the original vinyl LP contained a totally different, much lamer mix of "Outstanding" that I believe was never sampled in a later hit. Ha! Edited 8/31 to clarify that I am not sure if the LP & 45 versions are any different, it's just that I am pretty sure all sampling was done from the music bed of the *outstanding* 12' remix! Anyone out there please help me clarify if my recollection is accurate as I no longer have that original LP. Thanks! Andy Edited by AndrewChouffi |

I've not actually done an A/B between the 12" and LP/45 version, but I do agree with you about the sampling. It's typically the opening drums of the 12" mix that are sampled. There very well may be mix differences, too.

Bumping up this old chestnut to get some clarity, hopefully. Aaron, is this the promo 45 that actually contains the regular 45/LP mix that you referred to?:
https://www.discogs.com/The-Gap-Band-Outstanding/release/450 6970 If so, that's disappointing. Although I could never quite get my hands on a copy of it, or find a YouTube rip, etc., I had assumed that release to be an edit of the 12" Remix. The main circumstantial evidence I was going off of is this old Soul Train performance that someone uploaded to Dailymotion, where the band performed in sync to a shorter edit of the remixed version that they were clearly familiar with. You can tell that the crowd noise has been piped in before the song is fully over, so it's very easy to hear how this version would probably time out around the 4:00 mark, like the "3:57" promised on the single labels. There are also some pretty precise edits around the 3-minute mark (during the channel/bridge section of the song) that it's hard to imagine were done for just a one-off TV performance. Maybe this is a case of "we meant this to be the single version but then we goofed and pressed the LP Mix and that was that"? FYI, I have recreated this "Soul Train" edit myself (I timed my version out to 4:01 with a fade) if anyone is interested. Edited by EternalStatic |
