Before I invest in a promo 45, any way of recreating the 4:00 DJ edit from the LP version?

Yes, there is. I'm pretty sure it's just an early fade. I'll have to double check it, though.

I believe the second verse is taken out. I have a version on a K-Tel album, I think it's "Radio Active", which cuts out this verse:

"Look at me, you never look at me,
Ooh, Ive been sitting, staring, seems so long.
But youre looking through me
Like I wasnt here at all.
No reply, theres no reply at all."

I'm guessing that this was the single. I know in the '70s that K-Tel would make their own edits, but by the '80s, they pretty much went with singles or DJ edits.

Well, snipping out the 2nd verse takes it down to 4:07, so there's still 7 seconds extra... hmmm.

You're exactly right about that! I had forgotten that the second verse is missing on the DJ version. The edit occurs on the beat after the horn blast and before the word "dance."

To get the song to the proper length, which is exactly (3:57), you'll have to fade to the hand claps at that mark right after Phil sings "no reply at all."

Rich and Aaron, as always great work, thank you! Yet another DJ version off the list!

Darn - I thought I recreated it right - I had left the second verse in and took out the refrain before the fourth verse. I just borrowed the "I don't know" form before the third verse to join it up.

Darn I thought I did good...sniff (LOL!)

I should say what I borrowed was the drum roll from the first refrain. :D

The "No Reply At All" edit is what I grew up listening to, so everytime I hear that's 2nd verse today, it still sounds out of place to me.

Same thing with 2nd verse on The Who's "You Better, You Bet" and the verse they cut out on Rick Springfield's "I've Done Everything For You."   I just happened to think of those since all 3 edits are on that same K-Tel album I mentioned earlier.

my commercial 45 issued as atlantic 3858 does not state a version on the label but does state a run time of 4:37 and is identical to the full lp/cd album version listed below...the 45 did NOT originally come with a picture sleeve...

(S) (4:37) Atlantic 19313 Abacab
