Though it's not in the database, was there a 'single version' or 'radio edit' for this song? I found a copy on a CD called This Is Mullet Rock that runs 3:35 and ends cold.

My other copy of the song runs around 4:49.

I was researching this song the other day, too. Did they even release a 7" single? The video uses the full-length version. There is a promo 12" listed on eBay with an "edited version," but this is the 1986 "live" version.

Yes, indeed. Issued here in the U.S. in 1982 on EMI America B-8140, complete w/ a picture sleeve. B-side was "No Particular Place to Go" (live version). Printed times were (3:36) and (5:30), respectively, so it very much appears that "This is Mullet Rock" has the 45 version. Truly amazing that this classic song never cracked the pop charts!

Caught Mr. Thorogood in concert for the first time this past August, and he still rocks! He performed "Bad to the Bone" about half-way through his 14-song/98-minute set that night. About 30 minutes after the show ended, I got to meet him (very) briefly when he came out and signed autographs for about a dozen of us who were waiting outside in front of his tour bus... :-)

The early 80s were an odd time for pop music. Top 40 radio had somewhat turned away from rock during the disco era, but didn't really embrace it again after disco burned out. A top 40 station's playlist in '80, '81 and the first half of '82 was pretty AC-ish.
I can't really picture this song on Top 40 radio.

Interestingly, the single version is a different mix than the LP. The piano is pushed farther back in the mix and more to the left channel. There are also some bad edits. (That's bad as in sloppy, not bad as in "bad to the bone.")

I may have to take back my earlier statement about the single being a different mix from the LP. Apparently there was a "new version" released on a best of compilation, and that has made its way to other compilations. This mix has a false start, too, that I'm not hearing on what I presume to be true the LP version. So, I guess the single can be created from the LP version.

So, does the Mullet Rock version match the 45, or is it the "new version"?

I don't own "Mullet Rock," but if it has a 3:40ish version, it's probably the single version. I was trying to edit down the long version to match a 45 dub without realizing that there are two long versions: the LP and the "new version" (or whatever it was called on the best of comp).

Another note: The EMI America single was reissued on EMI on their last vinyl single series "For Jukeboxes Only". Is identical length. And is better mastered than the original EMI America issue.
I turn up the good and turn down the bad!
