I have just discovered that there are two common versions on CD. One has a harmony saxophone, the other doesn't. According to our 45s expert, The45Prof, it's the harmony one that is the 45.
There are three CDs in the database that should be checked. I believe the Varese CD is correct (but it runs too slow), while the Curb CD might be incorrect (but correct speed) -it needs checking. I have the CD at home (Canada) in a box, so I can't check it. The stereo CD needs checking as well. I don't have it, but the 1997 Bear Family 6-CD set has the stereo, and it has the harmony sax (and correct speed). |

Greatest Hits on Curb is mono and has a single-tracked saxophone. If anyone has the mono LP of Sail Along Silv'ry Moon and can check what's on it, maybe the CD has the mono LP version. For now, I labeled the Curb disc "single tracked saxophone." My copy of the Varese CD is at storage, but if anyone has it handy and can check the version, please let us know. Otherwise, I'll grab my disc. I don't have the Collector's Choice disc at all, but the parent LP was issued in stereo in 1959 (according to Discogs), so perhaps it has the stereo LP version.

Ok, so I do have a copy of the Varese Sarabande 5525 CD and the saxophone on Billy Vaughn and His Orchestra's "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" does appear to be double-tracked (I also have the Curb 77345 CD and agree that the song is definitely single-tracked on that disc). However, as I listen to the vinyl 45 dub posted on The45Prof's YouTube channel, it kinda sounds to my ears like there may be some additional reverb on the recording that's not present on the Varese CD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVLIomOra8U Aaron, I can shoot you a dub of "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" from the Varese disc if you want to listen for yourself. |

Todd, you've joined the 5-star member group (below your screen name) and not just because you sent me the file! I poked around in the panel, and I found a place where I could set this up. As such, we now have Music Fan (under 1,000 posts), Rising Star (1,000 to 2,499) and Shooting Star (2,500 and up).
Anyhow, regarding "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," the Varese CD has an alternate take compared with the 45 Prof's dub. You'll notice at the 0:21 mark of the 45 and Curb CD are six short notes played on the sax. On the Varese CD, those notes are slurred together, so it's an obviously different performance. I agree with you about the reverb, too, that the 45 has reverb not heard on any of the CD versions I've heard so far. |

Because I fell in love with "Sail Along Silvery Moon" at age 14, I just had to own the whole album. The track on my mono LP appears to be the same harmony-sax-with-reverb version as the 45.
However, I do retain memories of having heard a less full-sounding arrangement on the radio before the commercial single was issued. Bill Randle, WERE, Cleveland, mentioned that the new single version had been 'juiced up' (or whatever he called it) from the original track. An advance promo 45 or early-pressing LP? I have no idea. Because Randle was a highly influential hitmaker, Dot may have sent him an acetate of the master to see if he'd give it a tryout on the air. I'm just now doing fresh transfers of the 45 & LP tracks to submit for your comparison. Having never yet uploaded any files here, what is the procedure? Or should I send them to an individual? Thanks. |

Thanks, Bob! You can send the files to me via email, or if you prefer, you can upload them to your YouTube channel and then post the links here. In any case, it appears we still do not have the hit version on CD. I appreciate you looking into it and for checking your mono LP!

I have updated the database to read "neither" for the Curb CD based on MusicProf's new info. I also changed the wording to "harmony" rather than "double-tracked," as it's truly a harmony and not just a layered sax playing the same notes.

Hey, I guess now whenever I hear the chorus from the Bad Company song: "Don't you know that you are a shooting star?", I can now nod my head and emphatically reply: "YES!!!" 😀 Anyway, nice job with detecting that "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" on the Varese disc is a different take/recording altogether! It makes me wonder if the differences were so subtle that even the normally-reliable Varese label, whose folks are known for taking pride in seeking out the correct hit recordings from the best-sounding available sources, may have been fooled in this case. I could sense that something was different with the overall sound on the 45 but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Glad I sought out a second opinion on this and didn't just simply -- and thus, inaccurately -- conclude that the Varese disc contains the hit version but with less reverb! On a related side note, I would really like to figure out how to extract audio from YouTube videos and import it into my Adobe Audition 1.5 software, so that I can more effectively perform A/B comparisons with CD tracks, rather than having to toggle back and forth between listening to YouTube and an audio file uploaded in Adobe Audition. Does anyone know how to do this who can advise me, perhaps off the message board? Edited by Todd Ireland - 15 hours 42 minutes ago at 9:09am |

Allavsoft will allow you to paste the link and it will save the file in whatever format you'd like. I save them as FLACs.
I have saved Bob's videos a lot over the years to recreate 45 versions. |

Now I'm singing the Bad Company song since I'm a 'Shooting Star."
Thanks, Aaron! |

Glad to wake up to all the posts on TTs! I didn't listen in as far as the 21 second mark to notice that the Varese version is different from Bob's post and the stereo version! Great catch, Aaron.
Looking forward to hearing Bob's 45 and LP dubs! |
