In comparing my two Monarch-pressed styrene commercial copies of Johnny Rivers' "Midnight Special" (Imperial 66087) I discovered that they're actually two different pressings. The label copy is identical; listed time is (2:24). Here are the particulars:
COPY 1: Deadwax matrix # IM 6037 / Monarch logo / delta -55604-X Actual time is (2:26). Ends *very* abruptly, followed by a second or two of a low-level reverb decay. COPY 2: Monarch logo / Deadwax matrix # IM-6037 Re (the "Re" is in script) / delta 55604 X Actual time is (2:27). Ends with audience applause fadeout. (This audience applause is different than the "flown in" applause ending tacked onto the LP version.) Copy 2 runs at a faster speed than the "no applause" copy 1, with a difference of .86 second at the end of the last note. Copy 2 has a bit murkier EQ than copy 1. I also have a vinyl Silver Spotlight reissue from the Capitol era which has the same audience applause ending and EQ as copy 2, but the actual time is (2:29). All three 45s begin with the "Woo! Johnny Rivers!" intro which was trimmed from the LP version. |
