Another addition you can make:
Earlier this year, the Renaissance label re-issued the group Night's 1979 and 1980 albums, "Night" and "Long Distance", as a 2-on-1 CD. This collection of course includes their 1979 hit, "Hot Summer Nights", which you list as previously unavailable on CD (pgs. 796 & 1259). I don't yet have this CD myself, but a music buddy of mine already does... Not sure if the CD also includes the group's other 1979 hit, "If You Remember Me" (w/ Chris Thompson), as that song didn't appear on initial pressings of the "Night" LP/cassette/8-track (only the re-issue that was released a few months later)... |

There are two more songs we can now add to the "First time on U.S. CD" list. With the release of Pearl Jam's rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003) this past November, the hits "I Got Id" and "Long Road" officially make their debut on a full-length domestic CD. While both songs have previously appeared on commercial CD single, Pat does not list CD singles in his book. If my facts are correct, this means there are only two songs from the '90s that have never been on a full-length U.S. CD: "Voices That Care" by "Voices That Care" and Elton John's "Candle in the Wind '97". Interestingly, Pat does break tradition and mention the maxi-CD single release of "Voices That Care".
So how many Top 40 songs from the past five decades listed in the book are still M.I.A. on disc? |

My copy of "Rearview Mirror" Epic 93535 does not include "Long Road". What catalog number, disc and track number did you find it on?

I actually don't have a copy of this double-disc Greatest Hits set yet, but I ordered it online yesterday. I just went back and looked over the track listing again and it turns out I'm wrong. "Long Road" is indeed not on these discs. I had thought all the charted hits were on here.
Guess I'll just have to hold on to my CD single copy a little while longer! |

I forgot to add in my last message... my apologies for the incorrect information regarding "Long Road".

Thanks for reviving this thread, Todd...
I noticed that on December 12 (about 7 weeks after my post above), Pat left a note on the "CD Reviews" page about the Night 2-on-1 CD from Renaissance - guess I gave him a good tip, lol. :-) Seems it doesn't include "If You Remember Me", though. Thanks for giving us the additional details, Pat... I hope to see this thread updated semi-regularly. In fact, I went out & bought the V/A CD titled "Then '80s Again Totally Oldies 7" from Varese Sarabande after reading Pat's initial post above. Anyone know why it took over 20 years for the Stars on 45 "Medley" to become available on CD?!? Legal difficulties of some sort, I assume??? (While I admit I haven't heard it on the radio in ages, it was a #1 gold-selling single, after all!) Now I just need to find that CD re-issue of Lindisfarne's 1978 album, "Back and Fourth", on Castle - for some reason, it seems a bit elusive (have had it on cassette for years now, and always loved it)... At any rate, here's another top 40 hit that we can strike from the "unavailable on domestic CD" list, which I've yet to see mentioned on this site: On November 2, the Wounded Bird label re-issued Tom Johnston's first two solo albums on separate CDs - "Everything You've Heard is True" (1979) and "Still Feels Good" (1981). The former of course includes his 1979 hit, "Savannah Nights", which is listed in the 10th edition as previously unavailable on CD (pgs. 583 & 1285)... Let's keep up the good work! :-) |

Thanks for the update regarding Tom Johnston's "Savannah Nights", 80smusicfreak! I've been waiting to find this song on CD for quite some time. Looks like the Wounded Bird label is shaping up to be a great source for elusive, first-time-on-CD titles.
As for the Stars on 45 "Medley", I actually bought it on a German import CD single years ago (label: ZYX Music; catalog #GDC 2105-8) but it has a longer intro and each of the medley's song snippets are given their own individual track number on the disc. Hit single medleys, especially those featuring music by multiple artists on multiple labels, do typically have licensing complications so I wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason why "Medley" took so long to be made available on CD in the U.S. Speaking of Stars on 45, a poster a while back on the "Both Sides Now" chat board (at bsnpubs.com) claimed that the U.S. 45 version of the Stars on 45 "Medley" appeared once before on a domestic CD, a 1991 RCA compilation called Keep On Dancing. He further claimed that this CD also contained the even harder to find single mix of "Stars on 45 III", the Stevie Wonder medley. The poster provided no catalog number and I've never been able to track down a copy of this disc. Does anyone know anything about this CD or have any evidence that it ever existed? Also, I notice in the introduction of each edition of Top 40 Music on Compact Disc that Pat gives an update on how many songs from each decade are still not available on CD. What is the current tally as of right now? |
