IIRC, said instrumental section is what appears at the beginning of the 45, instead of the first 21 seconds of the LP
version.

There was a 2005 version of this song that charted on
Billboard's Smooth Jazz airplay chart peaking at #13 in
2006. Any idea where this version is from?

Simplified was the ninth studio album by Simply Red, released in October
2005. It featured new, rearranged recordings of the band's older songs
including Holding Back the Years.

It must be the "Simplified" version. The year is right and
that version definitely has the sound for Smooth Jazz radio.
