Many years ago, I got a call from Irene Cara's manager.
She said that we had an incorrect birth year listed for Irene in our Top Pop Singles book. I told her that the sources we had (including 1980s promotional material from Irene's own promo team) indicated that 1959 was correct. A few days later I got a call from Irene herself, DEMANDING that we change the date. I told her that I appreciated the call, and if she could send me some documentation, I would gladly change it. She then literally started screaming at me, saying some choice words, and then furiously hung up the phone. We never got any documentation and never heard another word from her again. Even her Wikipedia page has a note about the disputed birthdate. Even after that experience, I still enjoy her music and remain a fan of her in general. |

Wow, thanks for sharing that fascinating personal anecdote with us, Paul! All I can say is that you're a better man than I am for remaining gracious and complimentary of Irene Cara after receiving such unnecessary rude and belligerent treatment from her. Yet, from another standpoint, how cool is it to know that many of the musicians who appear in Joel Whitburn's reference books are probably fans of your work!

I had the privilege of talking directly to a few artists
over the years. Meco Monardo, Narvel Felts and Joe Dowell, all gave me some great bio info. Kenny Loggins called to order a book for his son. Reps for Elton John, Michael Jackson, Casey Kasem and Dick Clark would regularly call to order. Sir Tim Rice would call himself to order just about every book. I got to be friends with FOJ (friends of Joel) such as Duane Eddy and Mike Curb. It was a particular thrill for me to correspond with Paul Grein and Fred Bronson as I was a huge Chart Beat fan. All in all, Irene was the only one that ever had an issue with us. But as I said, I'm still a fan. |

Wow, what a story, Paul. I met Irene just once. She was eating dinner with a friend - the place wasn't very crowded. And though I generally don't walk up to artists/stars when they're having a meal, I did this time, as I felt I may never have the chance to talk to her again. (I was right and I never will). She was very gracious (especially considering the circumstances). I told her how much I loved her voice and songwriting. (She wrote the music on "You Were Made for Me", my favorite song of hers). She was very nice ... but then again, I didn't ask her true age :)

I'm going to chime in here with a few observations:
1) The 45 prof times in the 45 version at 3:56 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJWUGuBb6HM 2) No CD release has it correct. They all seem to miss the extra few seconds at the end. I know its a few seconds at the end but just trying to be accurate. Anyone want to chime in? I know Ron went with one of the first versions on CD on a comp Hear The Light but that is a few seconds short. Also to chime in here my friend was Irene Cara's publicist. While I didn't know Ms. Cara directly I was very saddened by her death. Edited by PopArchivist - 16 hours 21 minutes ago at 8:39pm |

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

Yes, this appears to be a case where the longest version on CD runs 3:54, while the fade of the 45 plays for a couple more seconds. Perhaps the soundtrack vinyl LP runs slightly shorter, too, although the "3-second rule" would disqualify it from being a 45/LP length.

Perhaps someone can create a nice sounding 3:56 digital file using the last couple seconds of the 45 from Bob pasted on to what Ron has.
