I've been listening a lot to songs on the Pandora app and notice that it gives info (e.g. 1998 remaster) and when comparing it to the same album and song on Spotify, the same info isn't there. (And probably the same is true on CD). So if you have the app, you can look up a song and potentially find more info. Sometimes the song will say something like "single version", "re-recording", "remix". Obviously, a re-recording would be evident to any of us. But this info can be helpful, too.

Sometimes, though, I find "single version" a bit misleading, when the album version isn't different. I think what's going on there is that for reissued CDs which included bonus cuts with 12" versions, they distinguished the other version on the album as "single version" or even "album version".

When in doubt, use Discogs. I use it if I come across a song that's mislabeled. It's moreos for YouTubers that will list a song as a single version, especially a song I know that's never had a single release. I've gotten on them about that, saying that it's misleading and their reasoning is it's on a 7' single and therefore it's a single version. The same goes for a song that has a 12' release and it's the regular version and well you guessed it, it's the 12' version that's on a 12'!

Recently, I came across Michael Bolton's "Time, Love & Tenderness." In case some of you don't know, the video version starts out with Michael and friends in a studio singing accapella the songs title. This version I'm 99% sure the video version was NEVER released on any format. However, this YouTuber records it somehow and since the video version runs a little over 5 1/2 minutes, its labeled as the 12' Extended Version. I mentioned how it was misleading and his response was he made it and I'm like no you didn't but I do know there's a lot of unofficial mixes of songs that people make. The things people do to post their stuff to YouTube,
