In the course of one of my projects, I noted Pat's listing on each of the CD entries for this song as "much slower than the 45 or LP and faded too soon." I wanted to test this so I purchased a copy of the original Chess 1829 single and compared it to the CD version of this song on MCA 31205 "Vintage Music Volume 8" and Chess 31320 "Best Of Chess Rock 'n' Roll Volume 2."

My comparision is that the CD versions on both of the above listed are, in fact, a bit slower (I was able to match the speed by increasing the CD pitch by 0.7%) but that the lengths are exactly the same with the same fade. At least as to those two CD, the description probably should be changed (at least as to the 45 version comparison).

Thanks for passing that info along, satchdr. It's also possible that Pat might have a different 45 pressing that fades out sooner. Can you provide the matrix numbers etched into the runout grooves on your 45 copy?

The deadwax numbers on my 45 are 452A 11722 -- are you sure your matrix number is 425A Dan?

Anyway, the fade begins sooner on every cd I list in the database when compared to my vinyl 45. My 45 also runs longer than any appearance on cd and ends with the drum fill solo but before the fadeout of the 45, the organ comes back in briefly before fading out completely. You do not hear this organ on any of the cd appearances of this song.

Pat, I checked and I transposed the numbers. It is, indeed, 452A 11722. I'll re-compare my 45 to the two CDs I have. Dan

Pat, because my Chess 45 was in pretty sad shape, I got another one through eBay and compared the fade. You are correct that there is about a one and a half second additional fade after the drum fill on the 45. Interestingly, unlike the commercial copy that I used for the first comparison (Chess on the label) that has the "452A 11722" deadwax number, the second copy I got (that has "Julia Dist. by Chess" on the label) has "Julia" then "425-A" (the latter crossed out) then "452-A" in the deadwax and does not have the "11722" inscription. Both 45s are a bit faster and the CD version can be corrected to both with the 0.7% pitch increase. Dan
