Judging by the "LP length" comments next to all database CD appearances of Eric Clapton's "Willie and the Hand Jive" in the database, one might conclude from this that the 45 is simply an early fade. However, I did an A/B comparison between the 45, which is mono, and the stereo LP as it appears on Clapton's Time Pieces CD (Polydor 800014) and to my ears they don't sound like quite the same mix. At times, it almost sounds to me like the electric guitar is either mixed way down and possibly even out-of-phase on the stereo LP because there are some passages where it's practically inaudible compared to the 45 (such as at the 1:06 and 1:40 mark).
I'm wondering if this situation qualifies for a 45 and LP mix notation. Has anyone compared the two for themselves? If not, I'd be happy to e-mail mp3s of each to anyone who wants to lend their expert ears for comparison. |

i just listened to the my commercial 45 of the clapton song "willie and the hand jive" issued as rso 503 and it is identical to the version from the cd "timepieces" except the 45 fades out to the 3:10 mark while the cd version runs 3:27.....the 45's run time info s/b added to the db.....the song also sounds very narrow and NOT mono.....just one man's opinion....thanks for the fade work, john....THANKS!!!!

I notice all database CDs containing "Willie and the Hand Jive" run 3:26-3:28, except for the hybrid CD release of Eric Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevard (Polydor B0003638-36) which currently shows a run time of 3:38. I just wanted to check and see if this :10 longer length is accurate or a typo.
Also, I re-checked my mp3 of the commercial 45 and I agree with Ed that the song is in very narrow stereo and not mono. However, I still think I'm detecting some minor mix differences between the 45 and the Time Pieces CD as documented in my initial post. And after doing a second comparison the 45 sounds like it may also contain some additional reverb not heard on the CD, though I don't know if this could simply be attributed to the fact that the 45 has the mid-range mixed way up, thus giving the record a decisively more hollow and "tinny" sound. And admittedly my commercial 45 is not the cleanest copy, so perhaps this could be distorting my comparison as well. If anyone else has done a similar comparison, I'd be interested to hear your take as well. (I'm pretty sure Pat told me a while back he had done one and couldn't detect any mix differences.) The correct running time is (3:28) not (3:38).

So 179 tracks into 1974 and I hit this track. Without having a dub is the 45 and the LP truly different? The Database of course has no 3:10 on CD.
Aaron or Mark or Ron, anyone want to chime in here? |

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

David can chime in....the 45 indeed fades at 3:10 while the LP is 3:28 . As far
as it being an alternate (or more narrow) mix, I don't know about that. What seems like a 45 playing on YouTube (it's vinyl and fades at the right spot) is the same mix I have from "Time Pieces", so.... https://www.youtube.com/results? search_query=willie+and+the+hand+jive+eric+clapton+45 Edited by davidclark |

I just listened to a 45 dub on YouTube -
https://youtu.be/GMxItT1JPQE The opening guitar on the 45 starts in the solely left channel while the opening guitar on Time Pieces is more centered. |
