From the Whitney Houston LP, final cut 'Hold Me' duet with Teddy Pendergrass. At 0:18 I hear what sounds like a glitch.   Would this be an example of a tape dropout? How can something like this get overlooked and mastered into the final product!?

This version runs 5:58 which is rather long for airplay. Was a 45 or DJ copy ever released? I'd like to compare if anyone has any info.

The 45 was an early fade, about a minute shorter. According to the wav file I made, it's 5:06. So I'm assuming someone told me that was the length of the single version.

As for the dropout, this recording was produced by Michael Masser, who also produced (on Whitney's next album) "Didn't We Almost Have it All", which has HORRIBLE vocal distortion throughout much of the song. If Michael couldn't hear that painful distortion, it wouldn't surprise me he didn't notice a little dropout in "Hold Me".

Just received a copy of the commerical 45
Asylum Records 7-69720

Teddy Pendergrass/Hold Me bw Love
4:53 listed, 5:18 actual

And yes, it is an early fade. The fade starts at 5:03 right till 5:18

I should also note their is no glitch/tape dropout at :18 in. It sounds more crisp than the LP Version.

There's a promo 45 on eBay right now. The label scan says
"Fade of LP Version" with a listed time of either 3:25 or
3:35.

By the way, the 45 version of "Hold Me" is on the Teddy Pendergrass CD called "Bedroom Classics."

The Discogs scan for the promo 45 states 3:35.

Arista record president Clive Davis was known for having the 45s list a shorter time than the actual run time (in hopes of getting more stations to play the song). It would surprise me if this was more in the 3:45-ish range.

I've always really liked this song (and especially the original version recorded by Diana Ross as "In Your Arms") but felt Whitney's version ran way too long. So for my listening purposes, I faded it the single length (actually a little shorter). But I think I'll fade this song to 3:35 and see how that sounds (i.e. if it has enough choruses before the song's fade is over). If anyone gets this 45, I'd be curious to know the actual run time, too.

Does anyone out there own the CD (issued in 1984) 'Love Language' by Teddy Pendergrass?

Since this was issued a few months before the 'Whitney Houston' CD, I wonder if it had a better dub of "Hold Me" as maybe Asylum sent Arista an analog tape 2nd-generation dub (including dropout) of the cut to include on her debut album.

Possibly there is better sound and no dropout on the Pendergrass CD if it is an earlier generation.

I'm thinking this is a possible scenario because back in '84 digital transfers to other record companies was not yet fully embraced in the industry.

Yes, and you're right.  There is no drop out on the Teddy Pendergrass album, and it doesn't suffer from that awful distortion on the Whitney album.

Hi Andy, I have the Pendergrass CD. PM me. I never really noticed a difference (in terms of generation of tape on this song) between his Asylum album and Whitney's Arista album. But then again, I never compared them side by side. Also, I'm not good at knowing when something's a clone of another CD. (I actually have no skills in that department. :) But there are other people here who do.

I only have one source from my CDs that I had loaded into my iTunes and I don't hear any glitches or dropouts at 0:18, listening on headphones. I just checked my notes to see which CD I had used as the source. I thought Houston but it turns out it was Pendergrass. So guess that answers that (unless you're hearing something that I don't). But I really don't hear any problems there. Now you've got me curious to hear the Houston CD at that spot.
