my commercial cassingle issued as geffen 19944 states the tracks as below

1-what is takes (remix/edit) (4:06)
2-monkey on my back (lp version) (3:56)

todd...i did some more digging on my end and i can confirm that the "remix/edit" version which is on the cassingle is identical to the "chr remix edit" that is on the promo cd single.....hopefully this one is put to rest....

version are very jarring.

Any conformation on this yet?

I just A/B'd the version on Big Ones with the CHR Remix/Edit, and nothing is jumping out at me. I'll have to do a more careful listen when time permits, but if I had to make the call right now, I'd say they are the same mix.

I just heard a version of this song on an old Casey Kasem countdown
where it sounds like a completely different vocal take was used. It had
all the typical edit points that I'm used to. Could this be a case of some
copies having a completely remixed version and others just have an
edit of the album version?

After syncing up the CHR remix / edit with the LP version (the edit runs 0.26% faster, likely not intentional), I can confirm that the mixes are identical.

Other than the minimal speed difference, the edit is slightly more compressed. Measuring from the first downbeat to 2 minutes and 33 seconds in (at the beginning of the first edit), I see the average RMS of the edit being -15.2 db.

The average RMS of the same section of the LP version is -17.25 db... so approximately 2 db greater peak to average levels on the edit.

The tracks used for this comparison are tracks 1 and 2 of the promo CD single Geffen PRO-CD-3852, ripped by Ron.

TL;DR - The edit is not a remix, although it is slightly denser than the LP version.

The version Rich mentioned above from a Casey Kasem countdown with a different vocal take... I have no knowledge of it.
