Is it me, or is there noticeable tape drag in the last 45 seconds of the song? I don't recall the 45
having it, but I could very well be wrong.

Good ears, Doug!

Rhino's Stephen Bishop best-of Best Of Bish (1988) does indeed have tape drag from about 3:28 onward. The same analog transfer is also used on TM Century track no. 0006211. These are the only sources I found that have the tape drag.

MCA's Stephen Bishop best-of On And On (1994) has no such tape drag. (If you'd like to compare for yourselves, slow down Best Of Bish by exactly 0.33%, and line them up. They start to fall out of sync around 3:28.) The same analog transfer is used on:
  • Heartland Music/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Magic Moments (1992, both original release and RE-1 reissue)
  • Starland Music/Warner Special Products' 2-CD Reflections Of Love (1996)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 14 Love And Tenderness (1997)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 13 1979-1989 (2001)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soft Rock Vol. 2 Ride Like The Wind (2006)

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

After many years, I realize the tape drag of this song,
good ears Doug!
Thanks for the information Ron.
Question: Does any member have the version without tape
drag and can send it to me privately? thank you

what is the running time of the versions with the tape
drag?....it must be a lot longer than the 4:12 single
version?

On "The Best Of Bish" it runs about 4:18.

The tape drag doesn't really affect the overall length of the track much; it accounts for about a half of a second.

What matters more is how the mastering engineer decided to fade the track.

Best Of Bish runs about 4:16, with a nice, long fade. The long fade is why I initially chose this as my preferred version, not realizing it had tape drag at the end.

On And On shortens the tail of the fade significantly, so that it runs 4:13.

The Tootsie soundtrack runs 4:15, and has a fade comparable to Best Of Bish. It sounds nice, if you can find it.
