My ABBA "Greatest Hits" CD (bought around late '85) says "Made in Germany", "Printed in Germany" and nothing with a US address on it. I don't recall buying it as an import CD. Of course, back then a lot of US CDs were printed and/or made in Germany - but I thought there was always a US address on the back insert if the US record label released the CD. Does anyone else here recall buying US CDs that had no indication it was a US-released CD?

Oh yeah, not all CDs back then had an indication that it was a US-released CD.
I seem to recall in the USA that imports back then were very uncommon in typical record stores because they were frowned upon by the industry. Therefore if it was in a mainstream record store, it was released by a US company. Andy |

The key would be if it was released on Atlantic, which originally issued the ABBA catalog in the U.S. and Canada. These were early domestic CDs made before there were any CD manufacturing facilities in the U.S. Look for the Atlantic logo and "Atlantic Recording Corporation, a Warner Communications Company" notation on the back, along with "Printed in Germany." The green "target" label on the disc also carries the Atlantic logo, with "Made in West Germany by Polygram" along the bottom perimeter.

It does say Atlantic (which certainly is a clue as I know Abba was on different labels for many European countries, and I didn't know if they were on Atlantic anywhere else.) I just didn't remember having domestic CDs back in the early days that didn't either have a US address or something to indicate a US release.
Speaking of not remembering, I also forgot about longboxes until seeing one online yesterday (for ABBA Greatest Hits). I used to throw them all away, figuring they were just taking up unnecessary space. But after they became obsolete, I now wish I had saved them all :) |
